Semuc Champey, Guatemala
An amazing formation, Semuc Champey is a natural limestone bridge: the main part of the river plunges underground while the surface forms these gorgeous turquoise shallow pools with gentle waterfalls. It is somewhat remote: the last leg is many kilometers on dirt roads, in the middle of the country with not too much in the way of tourism within several hours, but that makes the reward even more special!
We had such a great day... you know those days when everything is wonderful and the angels are singing? Yep, that.
These two images were both taken from the same spot: one with my wide angle, the other with my 18-200mm zoom. It was quite a hike to get to the viewpoint (over 1/2 hour of straight stairs), but it was worth it - and the hike down was much easier with the reward of swimming in paradise awaiting...
What a stunning view. It's hard to believe these were taken in the same spot, but its a great contrast too. I can just imagine the moment when you got to the top and saw this for the first time. I bet the swim at the end was even more special afterwards.
