I can't tell you how many times I have taken photos of this ornamental maple tree that sits in a pot in my background. It collects the best droplets but I've never had much success. Our yard is small. On the one side is the house and not far away a fence and neighbouring home so the background is generally ugly. Today there were TONS of drops and I was determined to get something useable . I did some serious editing. I cropped it significantly (I don't have a macro lens) and pushed and slid numerous buttons/bars to try to darken out the fence and make the drops stand out. I'm not sure if I over did it. Oh well, it is what it is!
I love it how you've got two of those droplets in focus. They're wonderfully round, too. :) And I don't think you overdid it, I quite like the dark tones.
This look pretty great to me. Did you use a tripod? I tried a similar shot recently and it came out so blurry. Love the contrast and focus. Well done, friend!
@amandalomonaco Thanks, Amanda. Yes, a tripod was used. I'd never be able to hold the camera steady enough otherwise. You wouldn't believe how much I cropped this... it's probably 1/6 of the original. Thank goodness my D800 takes massive files in raw.
Great shot considering its not a macro an the editing works just fine. If you were trying to get rid of the orange band (fence post?) how about selective desaturation so it doesn't stand out as much?
I think you did a nice job with the background. If it were any lighter it would be distracting. And the water drops do stand out this way. I'm dying to try out my macro lens on water drops, but haven't had any good ones since I got it
Definitely lovely! Is there any angle you can get at it where you can get more drops perpendicular to the lens? Then you'd be able to try and get more in sharp focus. Just an idea.
@archaeofrog It's a good idea, thanks, but then the shed would totally be visible or the house if I went the other way. I'll do it again when we move and the only view is the blue of the ocean as the background.
Beautiful capture! I love the delicacy in the image. I'm amazed that you could get such a nice shot without a macro lens. Gives me encouragement as I too am without...
Nice job, Kim! This shot just looks so wintry to me. . .all the in-betweens when it's not frozen but still you can just feel the chill! When is the move scheduled? I know you must be in high anticipation!
Gorgeous! In the last few days I've been shooting waterdrops as well, but yours are by far the most good-looking I've seen in ages. I love especially how the light reflects off the droplets.
