These are not the best shots but I think they demonstrate what it was like climbing the 463 steps to the top of Florence's Duomo church. We climbed numerous structures during the course of the trip but this was my favourite. There were lots of straight stretches that arched (like the dome) as well as curved bits. It wasn't nearly as hot as I thought it would be there and the view at the top was spectacular.
I'm a bit behind on my commenting. Baseball was the name of the day. We left the house at 9:45am and returned at 8:30pm. Two games plus a two hour rep tryout practice. We did manage to return home in the middle of the day for about two hours but otherwise I was watching balls all day as well as helping in the concession stand. Tomorrow brings two more games! I thought weekends were for rest???
Wow -- this really captures the idea well. I signed up for a meetup to go to the top of the belfry in Rockefeller Chapel at the University of Chicago this Sunday. The description said if one is afraid of heights or claustrophobic, don't sign up. I fear I've made a huge mistake, but the views are supposed to be well worth it. Your images make me glad I am doing it...I think...
Hmm you're setting off my stair phobia! I didn't like he going over the dome bit and it was packed when we did it so there were big queues and it got a bit tetchy when people were trying to get through the single file parts in both directions (unsupervised obviously!) - this looks quite civilised!
I can tell you that I climbed those stairs ...every last one. I am not good on heights and I did not anticipate that there are far too many places where one can see a loooong way down. When I went to go down I had a panic attack and my legs went to jelly. I eventually asked a friend NZ'er if I could follow him down ( so I could not see downwards) and spent a good deal of time on my back side when my legs failed me,negotiating the stairs. However it remains the highlight of my trip. Love your photos.
fascinating collage, A person must be fit to attempt this. Is it the same path for up and down, or is there another?
must be exciting waiting to see what is round the next corner

Wow! Not for the weak of heart! Those photos captured well the confined spaces, and emphasized the attention to the architectural feats of building this dome!
Wonderful collage.....you took some great photos in that confined space!
No, no fear of heights here......I would have done this in a heartbeat! Glad you went to the very top!
