Stantons Bridge by ladymagpie

Stantons Bridge

Another walk along the Thames & Severn Canal in the Stroud valleys and I came to Stanton Bridge, one of several along this stretch of canal. This is a simple bridge for farm animals and horse and carts and was built around 1780. The first barge to travel under was in 1785 and you were able to travel from the River Severn right across to The Thames.

The bridge is in remarkable condition for it's age which is more than can be said for the very overgrown canal. Fortunately restoration is on it's way, including the much improved tow path as you can see.

This really is best viewed with the magnify button above the pic.
