Why did we need Teaspoons. by ladymagpie

Why did we need Teaspoons.

With my last teaspoon offering (see the 8th May) I explained where the saying, "Born with a silver spoon in your mouth" came from. Today I look at why and when did teaspoons arrive.

They started in the mid 1700's at the arrival of tea. When tea was first taken, many tea leaves would float on the surface and teaspoons were made and used to remove these leaves before enjoying the cup of tea. The invention of teapots with the spout coming from near the bottom stopped most of this happening, and also tea strainers came in.

This solid silver spoon was made by Crisford & Norris in Birmingham in 1908 and was a souvenir from the Scottish Liner RMS Clyde (RMS = Royal Mail Ship) that took passengers around the world.

Thank God for teabags today.
What a fine specimen, the attention to detail is impressive. Although I use teabags nothing beats the zing of freshly brewed tea made from loose leaves.

well presented ! the other option was "Tinkers tea"
a spoonful of tea in a strainer and pour water through strainer
leave in cup till to your taste. Well that's lowered the subject.

Great photo and such an informative story! But I,m one who still prefers tea from a teapot - it still tastes better - so I'll use the teaspoon :)

How interesting. When you say "souvenir" do you mean souvenir or slipped in the pocket souvenir. It didn't occur to me about teapot drawing from the bottom. The things you learn on 365.
