I want you to think "Downton Abbey" or "Upstairs, Downstairs". and the days when nobleman lived in big mansions or estates. The servants toiled in the lower rooms whilst the rich and privileged lived in luxury above.
Have you ever wondered how all the goods, food and drink entered the house without disturbing the Lord of the Manor. Well will I was out geocaching the other day in the town of Tetbury, close to Prince Charles's home, I found a back gate into the grounds of a lovely home.
Beside the gate was this very old bell, not in use, marked "Kitchen Bell". This is where the delivery carts would stop and the staff would come out of the lower floor kitchen to take in the goods.
It's a bit different to me having to go to the supermarket for my quails eggs, smoked salmon sides, venison and old champagne, yes right.
Great find & well captured. My Grandmother was for many years the Housekeeper in a 'grand' house in Northamptonshire in the 1930's. I have inherited a couple of items that the 'gentleman' left my Granny in his will. Think that's where my love of these grand houses comes from.
Surprised you don't send your manservant to the new fangled supermarket, or have the delivery boys on bicycles bringing you fresh produce in their baskets...
