I haven't had one of my "Look around the Village" photographs for ages, so I made my way to a nearby road where I knew these buildings were. You may think I've gone made and there is nothing special, but you will be surprised at the history.
At the end of the WW11 there was a desperate need for homes and the government introduced the prefabricated house, today we call them prefabs. Thousands were quickly erected all over the UK, made of tin sheeting on both the walls and roof with some rough internal insulation were added.
This particular estate was built around 1951 and there are not many in the original form to see. Mainly because they have been covered with brick walls and tiled roofs. You can see the changes on the one on the right and left. They were meant to last between 10 to 15 years, but 65 years later they still standing because they are loved by the occupants. Many have been bought up and modernised, but this one is just how they originally looked.
Thank you so much for putting my Allium on the PP page yesterday.
We still live in one today,In Gloucester,There very spacious But as you say have been modernised Calded over central heating put in very nice houses still
What a gem this is Heather. Of course I remember prefabs very well but I have never seen a single story one before! I bet this one is nearly the last one in its original condition!
Tina lived in one with her parents in Horsham, and my aunt did in Battersea. It was lovely and warm and had good mod cons including a fridge which not everyone had then - around 1949/50. It was opposite a bomb site, and later redeveloped. Great memories :)
