Over the weekend most towns and villages around the Stroud Valleys would have gathered around their war memorials to remember those brave soldiers who have given their lives for our freedom.
Here we have Leonard Stanley memorial green with the church on the left and a small green before the wars had affected the village. If you look at the new picture you will see the top of the war memorial appearing above the line of cars, no memorial in the old picture.
There have been few changes over the past 100 years, these beautiful old cottages look just the same, perhaps a few extra dormer windows added. Look closely at the half building behind the green, in the old picture it looks plain but has changed to a Tudor house in the new building.
To the right of this house is The White Hart Pub, established in 1740. This pub has a blue plaque on the wall under the bedroom window where the famous Artist, Sir Stanley Spencer lived from 1939 to 1941. It really is a quiet and pretty area to live; perhaps that’s what he wanted for his art.
