I was talking the other day to my Big Brother about our Father's MBE medal, asking if he still had it safe. Not only did he have it but he mentioned another medal that he had from our Father's History.
Some of you will know that my Father was an Engineer on the famous airship R101 which crashed in France on a voyage to India. This happened in October 1930, a long time before we both became a twinkle in his eye. Only 6 people survived the crash with 42 others killed including Lord Thomson the Air Minister.
My Father was one of the worst injured, but he lead a normal life living, still in aviation, to the ripe old age of 91 years. My Brother found the other medal in a draw which I have captured above.
It turns out that it was present to him, and also one each to the other 5 survivors by the President of France at the time. On the front it has Republique Francaise, whilst on the reverse, "Chambre de Commerce de Beauvais et De L'oise". Translated "Beauvais and De L'oise Chamber of Commerce". This was the place where the R101 crashed in France.
I have visited the place where there is a large memorial, but this must be a wonderful award and just 1 of only 6 presented.
Such an interesting story and photos. A tragic accident, but your dad survived and prospered to an old age. A testament to his strength and determination.
