The hunt by laetitiapetrussa

The hunt

Seconds before the catch.

As promised, another shot from my hunting trip with the falconry association. I've posted a few photos since Saturday. It was a great experience!

I was amazed of the sharpness in this one! My method was to follow the rabbit once it emerged from the bushed, pan and shoot. But the low light demanded a slightly too slow shutter speed. I'm very happy with how this one turned out!
Eek. Run rabbit! Poor rabbit.

Incredible shot! Powerful image. Fav
January 14th, 2015
Nicely done - do we get to see the catch?
January 14th, 2015
@vignouse Do you really want to, Richard? It's not as sharp as this one. So you'll have to pardon me that. I'll see if I can post it later.
January 14th, 2015
@jbd1962 Thank you Jonathan. I actually gasped after seeing this photo on my screen. It goes so fast in real life that you don't really see these moments.
January 14th, 2015
@miley89 @deeganp Thank you girls for commenting! And, Miley, this rabbit made it eventually. It ran and hid and got away.
January 14th, 2015
Yay!

January 14th, 2015
Nice action shot! And good clarity :)
January 14th, 2015
@miley89 @jillhempsall of course some other ones weren't so lucky. These birds are natural hunters after all!
January 14th, 2015
Wow man, this is a absolutely amazing capture!!!!! Fav!!
January 14th, 2015
Fantastic shot! A definite fav.

@todimf @fjmom @jocee @ribbet9 @thresheg @opticlens @annachristina thank you so much guys for commenting and faving! I really like this shot too. I think it reflects the excitement of the hunt. The moment just before the strike. The adrenalin. Holding your breath and wait for what's coming...

January 14th, 2015
Awesome capture!
January 14th, 2015
Wow!!! What is the hawk?
January 14th, 2015
great timing, such drama
January 14th, 2015
@granpop To be honest, David, I kind of forgot. But my best (educated) guess is Accipiter gentilis gentilis. I compared it to my other shots and I'm pretty sure.
January 14th, 2015
WOW!!! Great capture!
January 14th, 2015
@essiesue @gabigabs Yhanks guys. Of course its not completely sharp all over the shot, but if the bird's face is sharp I'm happy! Panning the rabbit is way easier than following the birds, since there were several birds and only one rabbit every time. And of course the rabbit will only move in 2 dimensions.
January 14th, 2015
Beautiful action shot. Great timing and capture .Fav.
January 14th, 2015
great action image.

@pyrrhula @bill_fe @gailmmeek @mcsiegle @jo13 @rubicon @karink @judithg @ceilidh @denisefuller @spock @leephotoofyork @franklein Thank you so much guys for taking this time to comment and for and faving my shot! I'm loving this overwhelming response! It is indeed a fantastic and unusual side of nature. Something most people never get to see.
Although now that I look for it, I can see birds of prey at the side of the highway regularly. Yet I never see them hunting.
This was a great opportunity and I'm glad they let me join! I don't mind the hunt and the occasional kill, that's just nature. And better to do this than to have 'less ecological' rabbit extermination...
January 14th, 2015
Wow!!! That is incredible!

January 15th, 2015
@jrambo001 Haha thanks, John. The bird owners warned me about that, but nobody said anything. Surprisingly few likes on facebook, but maybe that's because they don't appreciate the uniqueness of such a shot. Or I didn't use any instagram filters! ;-) I'm glad many people here get as excited as I was with these shots. I never had so many wow's in my comments! I guess people who take offence will just not click on it.
January 15th, 2015
@skskunky @divast8er Thank you so much Melissa and Susanne! It might be incredible but it's very real, no photo manipulation needed. I never dreamed of shots like this when I left the house that morning.
@josmith @aquaina @gigiflower @kerrynz @fntngrma @sitiodown @bonsai @gingerphotoninja @hubsin @mamamayerle Thank you so much guys for these lovely comments and many favs! I appreciate them a lot! And they got this shot on the PP. :-)

@susanalena Thank you Susan! Me too actually. You never think that it's going to work out so great while you're shooting. I would have been happy with something vaguely recognisable. And then I got this one! :-)

January 17th, 2015
Omg!!!!! This is so fabulous! Did rabbit end up dinner? Fav!!!! (Saw this on fav of fav thread)
January 18th, 2015
@espyetta Oh, thank you MaryBeth! I had no idea my shot was on there. I'll have a look. This rabbit made it. Others didn't. Some were dinner. Some became pâté.. ;-) Thank you so much for the follow too! I hope you'll like my other shots too because there are more herons and ducks than birds of prey in my project.
January 18th, 2015
@laetitiapetrussa haha! Funny you mention herons... I have a lake house and have chased a good heron shot for years. The best chance I ever got was the first day out with my "big girl camera" and I had no clue what settings to use or what to do.. Heron came in to land on our dock... I snapped a few in automatic. Blurry but I slapped a texture on it and posted anyway. He evades me all the time... And I love ducks too. And geese and looms and grebes and kingfishers and ... You get the idea
January 18th, 2015
@espyetta I live close to a pond too, I have quite some shots, but they're not all that thoroughly labeled so there's this http://365project.org/laetitiapetrussa/tags/pond and a bit more...
January 18th, 2015
