Many people don't like doves for several reasons...but they forget that these birds are domestic animals (for example lost carrier pigeons, or doves that were set free in celebrations of weddings). Yes, they make a lot of dirt...but they are beautiful creatures. I enjoy to have them at my bird bath.
I love doves, love to hear them, love to see them, love to take photos of all the various kinds. Luckily, I do not know anyone that doesn't like them. Excellent close up shot and capture! Fav!

In the cities, pigeon droppings often causes dilapidations.
And they don't find appropriate food, so they sometimes look a little sick; and some people are afraid, they could pass diseases on to people (of course they don't).

In some places in Germany, they build dove cotes, and it's forbidden to feed these birds. They get feed in the dove cotes, and animal welfarists arrange birth control (they exchange the pigeon eggs for plaster eggs). This way, they accomplish a manageable and healthy population. Doves propagate theirselves the whole year, as far as I know - a manmade "breeding success".
@lastrami_ There is a bird here called a Grackle. It has literally taken over a lot of areas and ran off some of the songbirds. I had to stop feeding birds in my yard for a time due to them. Some trees downtown have netting over them to discourage the birds from getting in them, they are pests but protected. I will take some photos of doves and pigeons when the opportunity comes up and post them.
