After my shift at work this evening, my husband took me to this spot overlooking downtown (which is very close to my work) so that I could try taking some night shots of the downtown skyline.
Even though he isn't really into photography, I think he had fun helping me choose different shutter speeds to try and telling me which pictures he liked best.
Wow, Lauren! This turned out great! I was just thinking about night shots and if I could get the city lights to turn out well and you really nailed it!
Pretty. Kinda looks like Calgary too, to me. Could definitely use a longer exposure time, I think, to pick up more lights. Also, when doing a long exposure, trying zooming in (or out) to get some light trails. Just for fun. ;)
*thanks everyone for the comments and feedback and thanks to those who faved!
@fallingwaters i agree would love to do it at dawn, but i think that will never happen :) so maybe dusk
@jgoldrup thanks for the feedback Janna, i also tried some at a bit slower shutter 2.5 i think, but then for some reason the sky looks really pinkish, almost like the sun is starting to rise??? will have to practice i think!
Did you edit this after posting? It now looks like the contrast is jacked way up (better!)....could it be that the screens on my home and work laptops are that different?! I looked at some of my old long exposure cityline shots of Calgary and I was using exp. times of 15 and 30 secs. Maybe b/c I was in a dark room, without stray light getting into the camera. If you had lots of stray getting in, I could see how long exp. would overexp. Maybe you could dial down the exp. comp. as you increase exp. time to counter it a bit? Lens hood?
@jgoldrup no didn't edit this one at all. there was alot of stray light where i was. in fact there was lots of light under the little bridge i took this shot from. maybe next time i will try playing around with the exp compensation like you suggest.
i love the way they look at night too! you captured it so well!!! your husband sounds like mine, haha, he isnt into photography by no means...but he is always willing to give his opinion or help me out :D
@bkbinthecity oh gosh I'm so bad at directions and knowing areas. Honestly I don't know. lol. my husband drove me here after work, so somewhere near the UofA Hospital, on a road that overlooks this...
@harley84 thank you so much Katherine :)
