Busy as a Bee... by lauriehiggins

Busy as a Bee...

And bees are really hard to capture, so kudos to all of you who have done it better than me. My father left this morning to head up to Maine to spend the next two days with my youngest brother, so I spent the day writing and trying to catch up on the deadlines I left dangling when he arrived. It felt like summer today, and I'm bummed that I only got outside long enough to shoot 60 photos in my yard...this guy won. It kind of cracked me up that the focus is sharper on the pine pollen on the leaf than the bee itself, because that pine pollen is a thick film that covers everything - cars, plants, deck chairs and every surface in my house this time of year. It's simply awful. As always, thank you for all your comments and encouragement.
Is that a hydrangea? Because it's harder to snap the bees in those because they like to lie down in those and roll on their backs like puppies. I tried to shoot a bumble in my neighbors hydran. and it was impossible to get a good shot. It did amuse me though, I recommend trying a smaller flower or bleeding hearts if you have them . That said I think you got a very nice bee shot. And the flower looks awesome as well

Trina, this is a rhododendron, but the bees behaved exactly like you described! I actually thought "like puppies" myself when I was shooting and the shot I wanted most was of this guy, drunk on pollen, flying away with one leg simply laden with pollen. Of course I didn't get that one, but thank you for the advice on how to best capture a bee.

Pretty in pink! It's a great shot, you have to search the photo for the bee and that makes you look closely, and the colour and detail are great (in my humble opinion!)

I agree, they can be quite difficult to shoot.

They are such tricky little things to capture when they are buzzing around! So well done to even get one in a shot! Love the colours, lighting and the bees fuzz and wings :)

Both you and the bee were busy! This bee is cute, working upside down like that. I like the lighting on the stamens and pistol. Great shot!

They are hard to capture--even if you're up in their fuzzy behinds and you think you have a great shot. I think it's the buzzing, lol. I like the colour in this and the fact that he's hiding in there (:
