As I drove across a causeway over a marsh on my way to a farm today, I spotted this guy and immediately found a place to park. They're kind of shy, so this is my first decent capture of a Great Blue Heron. I got another shot of him in flight in my Second Take album, but my family liked this one best.
great catch - as you say they are most shy - not thrilled when i see them in my yard though - last time for some strange reason there was 9 missing goldfish.
Great Blues are called 'Skoggin' by locals in the Chesapeake Bay area. It's either a derivation of an Indian word, or a play on the funny noise they make, or both! I read your lovely article in the Standard Times, and immediately signed up. One photo down, 364 to go!
I like the Second Take photo better because it caught the motion and the size of the heron, although this is lovely too. The color of the grasses along the bank is really pretty.
@christiehicks I liked the second one better too, but the fam was weirdly in love with this one. That's what I get for asking for their opinion. Next time, I'll be more decisive on my own.
@aj1268 I've got to just put the wellies in my Jeep and leave them there. But I probably wouldn't have taken time to put them on anyway because I was so afraid this guy would fly away that I practically ran after I parked my car. I'm starting to think this is 365 madness, rather than dedication.
I've never seen one before
all I see here are ducks and canadian geese! thats pretty much it :O
("Ours" have all headed south... )
