Today I picked up our first share of seafood from the Community Supported Fishery. It's similar to a CSA, only you contract to buy seafood directly from a fisherman rather than produce from a farmer. What we get depends on what the fishermen catch each week and this week we got squid and butterfish.
We are really committed to eating local and to supporting our local farmers and fishermen. The CSF we joined for the next five weeks is for weir fish. Weir fishing is an ancient method of fishing that catches schooling fish during their spring migration. A huge heart shaped trap is set up with poles and nets. A long lead line creates an obstacle to redirect the fish straight into the bowl of the trap. There are only two weir fishing operations in Massachusetts now and both of them are on Cape Cod.
Cool info, didn't know there were still weirs around here and didn't know there was a co-op for the fish. Go squid...............
I wish fish could close their eyes when they die........
i wonder if i would like fish more if i could get it fresh? i am just not really a fish lover........but i am sure what we have here in no way compares to what is available to you. i think we eat pork instead......LOL
thanks for this info on weir fishing, very interesting!
Man, what did you do with that squid??? I've been afraid to do a seafood "csa" because I don't think I could handle it!! Veggies, yes. Fish with eyes and tentacles? Not so much....
