I was excited to get a few shots of a blue heron today. It is not as clear as I would like. He was pretty far away. Hopefully, next time I find one closer to shore that I don't scare away.
Well done for the distance! Suggestion: wear those big dark sunglasses like you wear over regular glasses, and then don't look directly at them. They seem calmer if they can't see your eyes. With practice you'll find that they will let you within 12 feet or so if you move slowly and stop often - two steps, stop, take picture, two steps, etc. Also, the younger they are the less skittish they are. All of my heron shots were taken with either a 5x or an 8x point and shoot.
@dmariewms Thanks for the suggestions, Marie. I didn't even see the heron I scared away until it flew up. My husband says that he has gotten as close as six feet from them in our pontoon boat while fishing. I'm thinking the birds are hoping to snack on his discards. Guess my camera and I will have to tag along sometime soon :)
Sorry I've missed following you all this time! I think this picture is absolutely lovely - I know how hard the herons are to capture, but what amazes me here is the whole scene. Congrats!
