New Chum Hill battery stamper by leggzy

New Chum Hill battery stamper

The battery stamper was used to separate the gold from earth & rock - usually water powered, it would stamp (thump) up and down to crush the earth & rock.

There's a bit of a story how New Chum Hill got its name, and it goes like this.....

Early in the gold rush at Kiandra, some new chums arrived asking other miners about good spots to try their luck. They were jokingly directed to a most unlikely location. Their tunnels soon struck rich deposits and New Chum Hill became the site of intensive mining, and given the name New Chum Hill because of the new chums who had struck it rich. The gold had been deposited in a thick clay matrix by an ancient stream and was best removed by sluicing.

Too darn hot to do much at all today....it reached 42.5C :-O
I pretty much stayed inside in the a/c, besides a bit of early morning gardening, so no photo today.
An interesting story surrounding the battery stamper. Really hot and humid here but NOT THAT HOT !!!!!! Lucky you have AC. The new chums would have really felt the heat in their corrugated iron shacks :)

Very interesting story, I've never seen anything like that. You're stuck in the house because of excessive heat and I'm captive in my home because of extreme cold...teens here (f*)

Lovely shot and interesting story. Hot here today too, but not as hot as where you are. I have done very little today too. Shopping early this morning before the temperature rose.

42.5! That's a foreign language over here leggzy. I didn't know battery stampers even existed.

Great shot, I love the vegetation growing on it. I'm glad they've been preserved. It's strange to see the stampers, without the rest of the battery around them. I'm really enjoying our cooler weather, 27 today, but up to 35 tomorrow :)
