Cornish quartz roasting pits by leggzy

Cornish quartz roasting pits

This is where we ended up after going through the turnstile that I shared a few days ago. This is the front face of the roasting pits - up above are 2 big circular pits that are linked up with the openings here on the face. Apparently they roasted the quartz, as they believed that that made it easier to crush the quartz, to then be able to extract the gold.
Very interesting history

I love the stonework, never heard of roasting quartz to extract gold. It makes you wonder how they came up with the idea and if it actually made the process easier.
