Hoopers Island lighthouse was lit in 1902 and is one of 5 built in the bay in the 1900's. It has a caisson style base that is sunk 13.5 feet into the muddy bottom of the Bay. It was first lit in 1902. The deck is about 18 feet above the water level. The height of the light above the water is 63 feet. It was automated and the keepers removed in 1961. In 1976 the fresnel light was stolen and the Coast Guard replaced it with a solar optic one. Hooper Island Lighthouse is the only cast-iron caisson lighthouse in Maryland with a watch room and lantern placed on the tower.
It was an hour boat ride from our last lighthouse to this one. We saw the Ever Forward Cargo Container Ship finally heading to Richmond after being suck in the bay for a month and raced to get in front of another very long large ship because our photo leader thought it would make a good picture. LOL We arrived at Hoopers Lighthouse about 30 minutes before sunset and circled the lighthouse to watch the magic happen with our cameras in hand. One more lighthouse to go ....
