Today I went back to China Town, and as Chinese New Year is approaching the whole area is heaving with activity. It's a popular custom to give oranges because in Chinese, the word "orange" sounds like "Ji", which means "good luck" or "wealth". People present oranges to their friends and relatives to express their respects and good wishes for the coming year. Many families will also have a small orange tree in a pot outside their frontdoor.
