Rosa x centifolia by louannwarren

Rosa x centifolia

This rose has several names, it is a Provence rose or cabbage rose, or Rose de Mai, it is a hybrid rose developed by Dutch rose breeders in the period between the 17th century and the 19th century, possibly earlier. I snapped this shot in the rose garden at the Dallas Arboretum, it was one of only a few blooming in the Texas heat that day.

We all know the famous quotation of Gertrude Stein, "A rose is a rose is a rose", published in 1922, roses have captured our imagination for centuries. They very well may be the perfect flower for all time.
interesting facts ... it is shaped like a cabbage, but prettier!

Beautiful rose! Fun facts too. They are many people's favorite flower. Not mine, but I do appreciate how beautiful they are.

@olivetreeann If I had to name my favorite flower I would have a very hard time deciding which flower to choose. When I was small we had a bed of purple irises, I might choose that flower, but that would be just for sentimental reasons. Our neighbor had a bed of peonies that we all hovered over, waiting for them to bloom, they are exquisite flowers. Oh, how can I not consider the Hydrangea?! I have several planted in my yard that were given to me for Mother's Day over the years. So, I cannot choose one flower, I cannot!

A lovely "old fashioned " rose and I love its cabbage form and its delicate peachy pink colour . Like you Lou Ann I could not choose a favourite flower .

The Rose Garden at the Arboretum is truly out of this world. It is at its best in the spring of course. They have antique and heirloom roses that would be a Rosarian's Heaven. I love to take a photo of the plaque by the flowers and then research it when I get home. Thank you so much for your great comments and thank you @henrir for your fav!

Oh I'm like you...it would be impossible to name just one perfect flower! I do love the cabbage roses...not unlike the fullness for a peonie! As for iris, I adore the bearded ones as they also have a nice fragrance! Lily of the Valley...sweet peas...fuchsia...plumeria and ginger...tuber rose and gardenia...ubiquitous daisies...there's no end to the list... I love to photograph them all!
