The “Grand Falls” of Joplin, Missouri

When we travel, I use the Trip Advisor app to find interesting things to see and do at our destinations. Even though I had never heard of any waterfalls around Joplin I thought these would be something to see. Some of the reviews made me think these were indeed “grand”. My first clue that something was amiss was that there was no signage on the highway indicating where to turn. I found an address for the Falls and put it in GPS, then we drove for miles. We literally would have missed this if we had been looking the other way. GPS didn’t really know where we were. So I hopped out of the car and took a few photos of these falls on Shoal Creek in Joplin, Missouri. We laughed about this, as the falls are maybe 5 feet tall and the surroundings are not lovely or grand, ha!
Your story made me laugh. You wonder how they make up these travel reviews ! Still, it technically is a waterfall, even though they are not very grand.

@bintal I was so surprised, but it does make for a fun story from our trip.

Ha, the water is falling down, so it's a waterfall...

Great find and a pretty capture, Lou Ann. Loved your explanation, too.

Nice accidental find even though you were looking for it. Jerry is very patient with your photo pursuits.

Interesting story made me smile we have all had a similar experience, but are you sure the GPS got you to the right location in the car park on Riverside Drive, Joplin or is the shot just the lower part of the falls Lou Ann:)

@pcoulson There was a sign stuck in the concrete across the road that said Grand Falls and pick up your trash. Lol.

@happypat I knew it wasn’t going to be really big but I did expect nicer surroundings. Ha ha!

@gijsje I know! Ha! @mittens I do think it has to be prettier in the spring! The bare trees didn’t make it better! @mave Thank you! And thank you for the fave!

I like the picture! And, the background may have not looked too appealing up close, I kind of like the eerie look that gives to it. Fav.

A lovely composition and capture

@cindymc Thank you and thank you for the fave! Well, it did look eerie. I really cropped a lot of tumbled up branches there. Evidently this is not an area that receives any maintenance! @carolmw Thank you, Carol!

Love your story, we have found similar disappointments.....you have captured the flow of water so very well, makes a good shot.

Well, I guess that's grand in Joplin, but not here where one of our falls (Raymondskill Falls) is called the Niagara of Pennsylvania! (Although I must say it's not for the width, but the height) Still, I like your persistence in finding it and they are pretty even if the setting is not the greatest.

Your story made me smile. Lovely shot of the flow of water.

Fascinating story! And your image really do make them look grand -- more grand than they are, I guess. Well done, and your narrative made me smile.
April 12th, 2018
I love your narrative, well done on finding 'the falls' 😊

Love your narrative...made me smile! Well, you did a wonderful job capturing these falls to make them look quite grand. I've had similar disappointments . . . just last week on the day I went driving in the Hill Country looking for bluebonnet photos I drove from Fredericksburg to Marble Falls because there was supposed to be a place called "Bluebonnet House" there, a charming old country house surrounded by a yard full of bluebonnets . . . well, I followed the GPS directions but the final destination WAS NOT a "bluebonnet house". I never did find it. Fortunately, I came across several fields of bluebonnets so the trip wasn't a total disappointment but I sure had my hopes up for that "bluebonnet house". :-)
