Felix Gonzalez-Torres 1957-1996 “Untitlied” (L.A.) 1991, purchased at Christie’s for $7.67 million.
At the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, this art installation “hard green candies individually wrapped in cellophane, endless supply” was on display, inviting the viewer to interact with the art by taking a piece of candy. This photo was taken during my birthday trip to the museum.
I've seen installations like this in various museums and struggle at the 'art' concept. I guess it goes back to Warhol's soup can. Fascinating, but such a hard thing to wrap my mind around as artistic (especially when the structure will keep changing as candy is eaten). Mmmm...maybe that's the point....?
@ludwigsdiana@taffy@carolmw@bkbinthecity@joansmor@henrir From the artist, I quote “We need our own space to think and digest what we see. And we also have to trust the viewer and trust the power of the object. And the power is in simple things.” Gonzalez-Torres was a Minimalist artist, he didn’t put his art on pedestals, he used a single object (the candy in this case), he wanted to eliminate the evidence of an artist’s touch. The candy installations addressed every single one of those points. Silly me, I was afraid to lean down and pick up a piece of candy, I’m so used to not touching the art in museums. 😊
At first I thought it was ivy growing into the room. However, after a few seconds I can see the sweets. I agree with the comments thatthis is not art, just fun.
I think we all went into the wrong profession - know I've seen lots of amazing creativity on here - it just needs to be applied a little differently - that price is unreal!
@milaniet@kwind@lynnz@happysnaps@suzanne234 I have now researched this extensively. This installation became available at Christie’s in November 2015 and was purchased for the museum’s 5th anniversary. There is a “political” note here regarding supporting the AIDS efforts in America, as Gonzalez-Torres died from AIDS in 1996. A substantial portion of the sale proceeds went to that effort.
@joemuli Thank you. I was a bit surprised they didn’t keep the edges straight, ha!
Hahaha!
