This 30 foot tall steel, marble and bronze spider looms over Crystal Bridge’s courtyard. It was made by Louise Bourgeois, dubbed the “mother of spiders” for her monumental spider sculptures. She admired the spiders of her youth - “I came from a family of repairers; the spider is a repairer. If you bash into the web of a spider, she doesn’t get mad, she weaves and repairs it.”
“Maman” cradles a nest of 20 marble eggs in the wire mesh sac on her abdomen, she’s really something to behold in person. I was very happy to get the sun flare when I took this photo!
