In 1938 Aline Badger Carter and her family were spending summer months on the island of Port Aransas and she decided they needed to buy some land and build a home and a chapel there. She already had a chapel in her 27 room mansion in San Antonio, she was very religious and wanted to bring bible study to the children on the island. It was long before ferries and bridges, so she contracted with shrimp boats to ferry the building materials to the island for her home and the chapel. The chapel is on the highest dune in Port Aransas, with the Carter home below, it has a wonderful view of the Gulf of Mexico and has not been destroyed by all the hurricanes through the years. Mrs. Carter wore white flowing dresses all her adult life; she was named The Little Angel of the island because of her penchant for wearing white and her bible studies for the children. You park your car and walk on a sand and rock staircase between two houses to get to the chapel. It really is a sweet place, the interior walls are covered in biblical murals, it has lovely stained glass windows and the flooring is flagstone quarried in the Texas Hill Country. It was closed but I held my camera to a window’s clear glass and managed to get a few interior shots.
seeing this, brings to mind the song "from the candy store on the corner to the chapel on the hill" which my mother used to sing to us when we were little children. aces on the shot, law. aces!
