When I saw the word of the day, “flora”, I couldn’t resist using this photo. I was probably two or three. She was 38 when she had my mother and my mother was 34 when she had me. So Flora was 74 or so when this photo was taken, she fell and broke her hip a few years later and was bedridden for the rest of her life.
What a lovely photo from the days of hand tinting the photos - A beautiful lady with great features ( but no smile of that era !! ) --on the other hand you have a sweet joyous smile ! fav
Lovely photo. There are many stories in your narrative, Lou Ann, that raise curiosity. I will stick to discretion and only ask whether your grandma was of Italian origins, as the name suggests.
@domenicododaro Flora Elva Rockwell Rainer was born in 1872 in Albany, Texas. Her Rockwell family was traveling by wagon train from Indiana, looking for a suitable place to start a lumber business. They ultimately chose Houston and had a very successful lumber business for many years. I honestly don’t think my family on my mother’s side had any Italian ancestors. The Rockwells were from Cloverdale, Indiana. Mother always said Flora was born in a covered wagon in Albany and while they waited for her and her mother to gain strength, they just decided Texas would be fine for a lumber business!
@julzmaioro she was terribly stern. Her husband (my mother’s father) was a school superintendent who drowned in a hurricane flood in 1919 (mother was 9 years old), Flora never got over his death.
you were a happy child. i recognized your smile right away. my friend whose parents are both italian, born in italy, was very surprised to find she has 10% filipino in her DNA, and 5% chinese. my cousin when tested found out she is 7.5% swedish. so if you would have a DNA test, don't be surprised if you find you are some percentage italian.
@summerfield ah well of course, all of America came from other countries originally. Well except the American Indians, our original Americans. I’ve just never thought about a DNA test, maybe someday it will pique my interest!
@louannwarren - i'm not interested, but most everyone around me have their DNA analysis in their phone. i just refuse to waste $125 just to know what i am. i know what i am, i don't have to know more unless needed.😉
Your lovely smile started at an early age! This picture reminds me a little of Bill's great grandmother's pictures - nice to have that original sepia look
A great image from the past. You both look pretty, only I do not see any resemblance between you two though others may think otherwise. Sad about your grandma, God rest her soul.
What a great photo! My mother was an old child and 38 when she had me. My brother is 8 years older and her doctor told her she couldn't get pregnant. Surprise! Twice!
