Sign, sign, everywhere a sign

"Sign, sign, everywhere a sign,
Blockin' out the scenery, breakin' my mind,
Do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign?"
- Five Man Electrical Band (also covered by Tesla)

So... after spending most of last week in Bismark, South Dakota, I headed to my favorite park for a lunchtime hike. Only to discover that a rather significant portion of the woods have been blocked off. I didn't have time to walk the whole park, but came across 3 of these massive signs, all placed across trail spurs. This is a area I've frequented for close to a decade, and there's some well marked trails that are now off limits. I don't know if the private property thing is new, or if it is a new enforcement. Either way, it makes me very sad.

Some images from the now closed area:

Sadly this sort of thing is becoming more prevalent. Nanny mentality, damage limitation for Nature, personnel issues, health and safety? We'll probably never know!

The song is45+ years old and the message is still not heard.

@s4sayer @joysabin Thanks both! The newly banned property is not really conducive to development, it is very un-flat and rugged, and has very limited access. I'm wondering if it is a liability fear? I'm sure the young folk will just go around the signs, while oldsters like me comply and grumble.

I guess that's just life.

For years, Highland said that the area around Silver Lake was unusable. I always found that funny since it was flatter and less rugged than the yard I grew up in. They eventually put a whole subdivision on the east side. So, you never know. They put houses in places in WV that I most people could ever imagine doing.

@homeschoolmom Thanks Lisa! I worked in Highland for years, and spent many lunchtimes at Silver Lake Park. There is a trail along the East side, which is really nice... except where it goes by that subdivision! That's one of the only things I miss about working out there! It's been 10 years, though, so I don't know what's changed.

@lsquared When I worked for the HIghland New Leader from 95-97, the city council always talked about how no one would ever want to live around the lake. Then they finally gave approval for that subdivision. We haven't lived there since 2012, so not sure if anything has changed since then. But, we loved that trail. Our Cub Scout pack cleaned it every spring, my husband often ran it and my boys rode their bikes on it while he ran.
