I guess the banks of the river was once forested, although i'm wondering what has preserved the stumps. Where I live, near the sea, the salt plus being under the sand for long periods has done the job,
@30pics4jackiesdiamond@helenhall@yrhenwr Thanks Jackie, Helen & David!! This area is just upriver from Melvin Price Lock and Dam (#26), which opened in 1990... This replaced the old Lock and Dam 26, which was about a mile further upstream. So the spot where this photo was taken is between the two dam locations, I'm guessing this was dry land until 1990, and largely underwater since.
You can tell by the looks of these stumps that they have been underwater. There is a dam near by us that was built for flood control. In the summer the water level is high for recreational boaters and fishing, They about drain the lake in late Fall to prepare for snow melting, rain and run off in the Spring. I was wondering if this part of the Mississippi was experiencing a drought exposing the stumps?
@skipt07 This is just upriver from the Lock&Dams at Alton Illinois... I'm not sure what the deal was, but the water level was lower than normal on the upriver side, and higher than normal on the down river side. Maybe they were doing some sort of maintenance on the locks or something...
