I am so happy to post this photo bucketlist shot!
I thought I did not have much to lose by giving this a go, and had filled just 12 water balloons. I actually never really thought I could get the timing right just using a verbal "one-two-three" countdown and a pin!

This is the capture from balloon number 11, and including set up, the entire shoot was over in less than 15 minutes.....mmm this kinda, *might* make up for the countless number of times I have struggled for *hours* trying to shoot water drops, water crowns and flying bees etc....

f 9.5 1/750 sec ISO 400 manual focus; HiSpeed Sync flash off camera +1.5 exp placed 1m from the hand, 90 degrees to camera. 100mm macro lens about 3 m from balloon. Black fabric backdrop 1m behind the hand, hanging from the clothesline in the backyard in late afternoon light.

Thanks go to Paul & Caitlin for helping - & sorry about your shoes getting so wet just before you went to the movies Paul!! LOL!
Wow thats pretty cool lookng, nicely done :-)

Well done. Rob and I did this last year but I wasn't happy with the photos so we will have to try again. You did capture a nice splash.

@dmward @sjodell thanks ladies - I should try & record the set up more often - sometimes it can be a real 'make-do' effort of bits & pieces :))

awesome shot - and only 11 attempts...it's on my bucket list but as my first water droplet shot took 567 attempts i'm thinking I need a day where I have lots of patience!

Well done!!

@sparkle ditto on the water droplet count! I have been procrastinating about / been scared of / wanting to do this for about 6 months. That is why I now feel like I've climbed a personal Everest by capturing the balloon shape in water with the lucky no. 11 balloon.

That is awesome, love to be able to do that. Got external flash lighting kit so i may see if i can have a go using that.

@stimuloog thank you! :) - I am thinking I had a 1 in a 1,000 chance on the timing - & this time 'luck' was on my side!

Perfect. I was going to try this today for my get-pushed. You've inspired me to definitely go for it.

Very cool and excellent result. I think you did it the hard way though. Another method for high speed photography is a dark room, open the shutter on bulb, then fire flashes as the balloon pops. You still need a bit of luck with the timing , unless you get a sound trigger.

ooooh! brilliant action catch! when i did this i used my sony nex7... it has the gazillion frames per second function that is just perfect for this kind of thing!

Perfect timing. I must admit that I did try this last year... but I cheated with the burst mode and a high speed camera setting outside on the grass. I didn't have to tackle this cursed flash... hahah.. http://365project.org/deborah63/365/2015-01-04
But I'm all up for trying this again with he flash this time.
