I was organising my lightroom presets this week and happened to discover 'colour grading' is the official term for image colour adjustments used in the cinema industry.

I quite like the colour management process but now find there is sooo much involved in managing the colours of what we see in movies and magazines. I took this blossom shot originally to practice white exposure, but have worked on colours here as well. Colour grading is subtle with intention - and now I feel as though I have come full circle in colour management.

This video explains it quite well, but took some concentration for me to understand. https://fstoppers.com/education/how-apply-cinematic-color-grading-your-still-images-56538

This is a different approach using LR -

I didn't even watch the videos because if YOU struggle with it I know it will be way over my comprehension! I am grateful you know what you are doing to give us such a beautiful example of it! Perfectly stunning image!

i am making a note to look at those videos... i think one of the reasons i struggle with colour is because i am always harking back to how cinema and tv uses colour to set the tone and mood of the show - in much the same way music is used (i assume)... and i just don't quite know how to do this and with colour...

@northy yes - I know what you mean - it sets a rather high bar if you need 2 degrees in 'colour' management to get it right. I have found Exposure by Alien Skin does a pretty good job - but without knowing the theory I was wandering about a bit aimlessly in the world of colour - now at least I 'get' that it is about making skin tones pop by using complementary colours in highlights & shadows and curve correction. I still have a loong way to go though. Oh I ordered my Mac Pro yesterday so might need to get some tips once I get the courage to open the box!!!

ok - i've watched the videos... i may have to try the PS approach with the vid running in order to remember how to do it as i tend to suck at curves.. but i am rather fascinated...

did you go for a macbook pro? that's what i have... i love it... although i'm still pretty stupid at using it... but for the most part it is completely intuitive and awesome :)

@northy yep - the full kit & kaboodle latest model! Will now get PS CC organised - another huge learning curve for me. The PS approach using colour lookup tables is what Rachel uses for fineart http://www.photoshopessentials.com/photo-editing/color-lookup-cs6/

but I think it would probably be easiest if I can get pretty close to the colours in LR & make my own presets / adjustments because I already have the image & catalogue LR.

Facing so I can find all these video references later... I need to find some pics to try this out on... Subway shots or something... Have fun with your new toy! Oh - and huge learning curve w PS CC, but I find as long as I expect to need to learn as I go, it's not too daunting...
