This week it has been difficult to avoid exposure to darkness in the world.
I use fog in many of my composite images, as an allegory for the partially hidden, and partially understood fragments of our lives. This image however is not a composite. It was taken on a very misty morning in Venice harbour in 2012. A morning that was ‘sort of’ in colour, ‘sort of’ not. On that foggy morning, some things were clear, while some things were just vague shapes that make no sense at all -- like this Mad-Max like fishing ‘hut’, in the calm water in the distance. There is so much I don’t understand about the darkness in the news.
I was surprised this morning when the ABC radio announcer Ian McNammara played this performance by Australian singer, Normie Rowe https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWi7ybLB6JE and dedicated it to the missing 7 year old In Barcelona, Julian Cadman. While this is a terribly old clip of moderate quality, it is a stellar performance, and made perfect sense. Bring him peace.
He is young
He's afraid
Let him rest
Heaven blessed
The news has been sad, and sadly the young boy's story ended badly. But there is still light in the darkness and this image gave me beauty to be grateful for. Thank you.
Fitting image to the news around currently. Troubling and sad times indeed, and fog is quite an apt way to portray the lack of clarity and general confusion that exists.
