Men at work

removing old thatch to be replaced. I watched quite a while, it seems like a tiresome job.
A very skilled job too. Nice shot, it tells a story.

I love to see new thatch. I had a great grandfather and a great great grandfather who were thatchers.

Amazing way to cover a roof

Probably dangerous work, too. Very easy to slip down to the ground. Beautiful capture.

Roofers all over the world are a hardy lot. They are not afraid of heights, for sure. This is a great documentary photo.

Does look like a tough job for those guys. Interesting way they use the logs for their support during installation.

There's not to many thatched cottages left around here, but it's always lovely to spot one. I could have wasted an hour or so watching this, great craftmanship

@pyrrhula All our old farmhouses have thacht and many ohers too. The Dutch must have started this when Jan van Riebeeck came here in 1652 ;-)

Oh my! This is what our house is getting this summer...a new roof! No one here does thatch. I like the look though and it must do a good job since it has been around for 100's of years. Our roof has a steep pitch and is costing way way too much! :(

@pyrrhula It sure is ;-) @lynnz Thanks Lynn, It is hard work but fortunately only needs replacing every 20 years. @gardenfolk Oh dear, that is quite a job too, How long does it take?

@ludwigsdiana They said about two weeks or so to finish the job...repair dry rot on dormers, all new gutters and stone coated steel metal roofing, called Canyon Shake by Gerard. The prices went up 30% over a year ago.
