My Buddy by lyndemc

My Buddy

This is RaneBeau, my Harlequin macaw. Some of you have met him earlier in my project. His eye was an up-close shot in my Macro March theme. I met him while visiting a foster parrot home - he was so charming with his cute "Hi!" and darling wave of a foot that I couldn't stop thinking about him. While I'd never even considered having a macaw for a pet, this guy called to me for some reason. Despite his being mean and down-right dangerous in the beginning, he's now my buddy, a big bird I can do about anything with from hug to plant a kiss on his big beak. And speaking of that beak, it's in need of a trim. I almost decided not to post this picture after realizing he could use a bit of grooming on the tip. He's not a big wood chewer so he doesn't do well at wearing the beak down himself. He can shred a cardboard box or a t-shirt in no time but that's like butter to a macaw beak. His favorite nut, the hazelnut, is the toughest thing he busts apart, and that's done effortlessly. Thank goodness he doesn't want to bite my fingers anymore.
Wonderful shot. Great focus.

Fav. That being said, I really like your buddy here - what unbelievable colors. Then there's that fabulous detail you brought out in your shot - against black and enlarged I was absolutely awed. Love the wonderful dof you used - really makes him outstanding.

A great story and beautiful bird! I was once bitten by a Cockateel, and know how sharp a beak can be! But he too became gentle. Wonderful that you've taken in ReamBeau.

Your little buddy is gorgeous, and yes, I do remember that macro of his eye!! Isn't it nice to have a little furry or feathery friend who knows and understands you?!! I bet he does not try to get into your suitcase!! FAV for this beautiful bird! I don't see him throwing any hissy fits when you try to photograph him! ;-)))

What an unusual pet, but such a beauty! I liked reading your narrative about how you met.

They are gorgeous birds! Great portrait of your buddy!

I actually think the beak lends to a spiral sort of effect that makes this quite interesting. and of course he is a beauty!

@pamknowler Thank you Pam. There was a day I thought I'd never achieve being able to hold him but patience won out! I feel very lucky about that.

Wow and fav is all I can say.

@vstap I too have been bit by a cockatiel and must honestly say it hurt more than a bite from a macaw. 'Tiels have a sharp point on the end of that top mandible while macaws really only manage to pinch. It's a painful pinch but at least doesn't puncture a hole in you. Most of the time.

@panthora Oh, this guy would definitely attempt to get in a suitcase. He's forever trying to slip in a kitchen cabinet or coat closet with the idea of hiding so I can't find him. He gives himself away tho by layughing while I'm saying "Where's RaneBeau?" And honestly he's a pill to take picture of. He thinks he has to play peek a boo with the lens and rarely sits still when the camera is looking at him. It took about 20 shots to get this on.

This is fantastic on black, and what a handsome macaw he is. Do you actually have to trim his beak yourself? Must be a little frightening, no?

Wonderful clarity and beautiful bokeh, Denise! Really great!

Hi RainBeau You are beautiful
October 17th, 2015
what a handsome boy. He must make a wonderful pet now he has settled down. Does he roam around the house with you.

They are really quite amazing creatures. I've softened a bit since I moved from the condo where my next door neighbor left theirs on the front porch, which bordered my front window. Watching football in the living room was sort of like sitting next to an air raid siren that got tested every time someone walked by - which was often.
October 18th, 2015
He's gorgeous!
October 18th, 2015
Beautiful bird! I love his expressive eye!

@cruiser He would happily follow me around the house but he tends to get distracted by doors that lead to rooms where he and his beak are not welcomed. (He chomped a game console cord in half once which cost me a fortune to replace and a lot of apologizing to the son whose equipment got damaged.) R has perches he is parked on where he can be a part of the activities but kept safe from getting into trouble. When I'm not home he has his own room where he's free to do as he pleases. He is fortunate to not have to spend much time in a cage.

@stray_shooter Uh, I can not imagine having to put up with a loud macaw like you've had to. RaneBeau is quiet in comparison to some I've heard. Was your neighboring macaw blue and gold? Those tend to be so loud, in my experience, but then too, so can the scarlet macaw.

beautiful
October 20th, 2015
@lyndemc Yes, the blue and gold version. Beautiful, but annoying. Sort of like being married to a Kardashian I suppose.
