Lunacy

There are 6 covered bridges left in Madison County, Iowa USA (counting this one) that were built in the 1800s. Some idiots recently set fire to this Cedar Covered Bridge, for the second time. Money has been raised to rebuild it again and three teenagers have been charged with arson, 2 boys, 1 girl. One boy's defense is that he is not guilty because he was intoxicated at the time. I hope he doesn't get off!
Very sad. Glad they can rebuild it

How absolutely infuriating what's been done to this bridge. Hope you'll be able to share a photo of the refurbished work once it's done (again).

People are so hard to figure out!

There no shortage of idiots out there, that leave you scratching your head wondering why!!!

It doesn't matter where in the world you live, there are always idiots to be found! Such a shame, hopefully it can be restored to its former glory.

what could possess people to try to burn down a covered bridge? Nice to see your photo of this one

Such a shame. I don't really understand some people. Hopefully you have a creative Judge. The two men that shot up the Cape Meares Lighthouse were sentenced to serve 3 16-day jail terms over 3 years. Each term started on Dec. 27th, which is the day of the vandalization. They also had to pay $100,000 towards the cost of the repairs. When he sentenced them he said "Some people go to Hawaii for vacation and some people go to jail. The next three years will serve as a reminder, and you will get some time to contemplate that."

How sad!

So sorry to read this story as we were always so impressed in North America how well the history is preserved. Thanks Laura for sharing the judges story - great idea as vandalism is so senseless.

We need more creative judges as Laura said - and make that more public - if only these idiots would stop and think of consequences- hard for teens to think that way it seems - so glad it's going to be rebuilt.

Senseless, I hope they have to help pay for the repairs. Being drunk is no excuse for anything. He did the crime so why not admit it.

I cannot understand it.

Cool capture. Shame that it's been vandalized like that. Hope they get their just rewards for their actions.

How tragic -- and pointless. So frustrating to see such vandalism. Well documented.

Such a ridiculous act of vandalism! One often wonders what this world is coming to. Great capture

Such a shame to mindlessly destroy anything, but especially something as beautiful and historic as this. I hope the kids who did this will understand the error of their ways, and that the punishment will teach them some respect for their environment. Nicely captured.

Sorry to hear this I hope they get a lesson they will neverr forget.

Sickening isn't it! I wonder what the parents are up to when kids do this sort of thing. I hope it doesn't take too long to rebuild it xx

The Bridges of Madison County - isn't that a book and a film? Nice shot of this one, shame about the arson!

What a beautiful bridge. I do hope they are able to restore it.

Very nice shot

Unbelievable! Burning a bridge. I hope they don't get let off.

@peadar Yes, Peter, this is actually one of the bridges that was featured in the movie with Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep. I read that there were two bridges featured in the movie, the other being the Roseman, the bridge in the movie that Robert was looking for when he met Francesca & where she left the note inviting him to dinner.

That is sad. What has happened to youth today that they have little or no respect for other people's property? There have been a rash of fires in a town close by for over a year. Most of the homes were abandoned and a number of youth have been arrested in conjunction with the fires.

I love these bridges, always great to see shots of them. Don't worry about getting back on my comments, thank you for recent two. Just enjoying browsing your thread.
