The hummingbird has this astonishing gorget, his little ruffled bright feather collar that looks absolutely humdrum until he turns his head just a bit into the light. Because hummingbirds don't really sing, males will use their gorgets in breeding displays and also as a threat to territory intruders.
Hope you have the time to view large!

Thanks to you all for your wonderful support, comments and favs while we were at the beach last week. You helped me have a stellar 365 week. I got a bit of teasing about how 365 and photography seems to be a passion equal to when my boys were teenagers and never moved away from their video games. . .they enjoyed seeing the tables turned! Thanks again to each of you for being so great!
Lyn this is awesome. Perfect focus on his face. amazing! My husband tease me about spending so much time on the site too. we could do alot worse with our time, and look at the results you are getting with your photographs!
Wow! This is stunning!! A definite fav for me! I didn't realize they had so many colors!! So sorry I didn't get your challenge posted last night. By the time I got kiddos in bed and things taken care of, I crashed into bed myself!! You have done everything already, which makes it a 'challenge' to come up with a challenge for you! :) (Especially for someone with my limited experience.) But here goes...I'm challenging you to do something with motion blur, maybe a panning shot. Hope that works!! I look forward to seeing what you come up with!!
@tryeveryday Oh, brother - you nailed it! I have only done ONE good shot that even approaches motion blur/panning. BUT I think I'll really enjoy this one. . .and I even have to leave on another trip on Thursday and very well may be presented with opportunities that I wouldn't have had at home! BTW. . .one of the best things about these GP challenges is finding new people to follow! ;->
@lyno I agree! I'm loving getting to know new people and their work! We are going to a local fair this week, so I'm excited about the opportunities that it might have for some great street shots too! Sounds like this was meant to be. ;-)
Awesome catch. Instant fav. If I ever saw a bird like this I would be in 7th seventh heaven. Did you take this in Siesta Key? I never see hummingbirds around here.
@cimes1 not there yet! Flying down to Tampa Thurs afternoon - lots of wedding planning going on for my oldest son and his fiancée. Their reception will be at the Ringling Estate...am getting very excited about seeing everything!
Awesome! Looks like he was putting on his display for you Lyn! You should tell your boys, video games brought pleasure only to them, but here you bring pleasure to so many of us :)
