Water spill by maggiemae

Water spill

Benmore Dam is the largest dam within the Waitaki power scheme, located in the Canterbury Region of New Zealand's South Island. There are eight other power stations in the valley.
The dam is the largest earth-filled water-retaining structure in New Zealand. Its core is low permeability clay material, supported by two massive shoulders of river gravel. Lake Benmore has a volume of 12.5 million cubic metres, about 1.5 times as much water as Wellington Harbour. The dam's spillway can cope with 3,400 cubic metres of water per second, about 10 times the mean river flow. With a generating capacity of 540 MW, Benmore Power Station is the second largest hydro station in New Zealand.

In the recent heavy rains up further in the mountains the lakes became too full so water was let go from Benmore as here in this picture and further down cascaded over the Waitaki Dam in a dramatic sight.

We went up here for a picnic today in temps of 34deg C (93.2F) It was hot but lovely!
That's incredible. How lucky that you got to see that. Great capture!

@espyetta It is actually energy being wasted, Marybeth! Shame but the lakes can only hold so much! Campers at the side of the lakes and the rivers had to move to higher ground!

@tonydebont I did about 20 shots from all angles and it was a toss between this one and one right in front of that cascade!
January 5th, 2013
@bluefirebucket You could call it deafening - we decided not to put our picnic basket near it and moved further down the lake - then got our ears deafened by the power boat noise!

January 5th, 2013
Fantastic - we visited Benmore Dam last April 2012 and it was so calm, I cannot believe this is the same place. South Island was our favourite island and we spent 6 weeks exploring NZ. I posted galleries of images on my website from our time in your beautiful country :-)
January 5th, 2013
@emmadurnford I'll have a peek at your site shortly - you are obviously a serious photographer - My equipment is one small camera and a tripod! Have a lot of fun, though.
