Rail tunnel no longer

At Hyde in Central Otago, the super Bike trail runs through this tunnel and out to a cafe in an old renovated house where cappuccino's and cheese rolls are on offer! One sits on 1950 style chairs and couches and views the landscape in front which at this time of the year is in a drought mode! Still a dramatic sight!

Three good things:
1. I am so thrilled to read all the comments that friends have put on 365 but I haven't been able to reciprocate owing to staying in SIL's house where internet is, 'what"?
2. Driving up different roads back home - this particular one and about 100metres of pig skin fence! Pig skins were lined one behind the other and amusingly some were holding the front one's tail in their mouths! Someone had a sense of humour!
3. Getting back home to a softish bed after two days on an ironing board!
Hey this sounds like a fun place to spend the day. Nice photo.

sounds like something @graemestevens is familiar with
February 8th, 2015
@annied mmmm.... do you think I should tag him?
February 8th, 2015
Hot day for cycling today!
February 8th, 2015
What a fabulous location! Did you run through the tunnel? Was there a cappuccino?
February 8th, 2015
@maggiemae I did in my post so he should see it :)
February 8th, 2015
@annied Right - "I know that" ahem!
February 8th, 2015
@swguevin No and yes! I don't run any longer, Sheila - only to save my skin (perhaps) and yes - full coffee options!
February 8th, 2015
@kiwisnapper It was hot today but we were back in North Otago - 30 deg!

We are in the process of trying to have our disused line turned into a Bike trail. This one looks well used.
February 8th, 2015
Great shot... looks very dry...
February 8th, 2015
@ubobohobo It has brought untold business to all the cafe's, b&b, hotels, motels, on the way not to mention the Cycle Tours!
February 8th, 2015
@annied @maggiemae Steady on you two. I like a good hole but this one is a bit too big for me
February 8th, 2015
@annied @graemestevens Don't interrupt woman when they are creating the scenario for someone very worthy!
February 8th, 2015
What a fascinating place! Great perspective!
February 8th, 2015
@congaree If you don't see it just like this with my wonderful zoom, you might completely miss it John!
February 8th, 2015
Sounds like a fun place at the other end of this tunnel. Too funny about "what". Nothing like a comfy bed. Not sure about the pigs skins.
February 8th, 2015
@darsphotos There are so many pigs destroying the land and eating whatever, not worried about them! But I didn't want to take a photo!
February 8th, 2015
@graemestevens @maggiemae
you have been to one similar - or the same so don't you steady me on hahahahaha
February 8th, 2015
@annied lol and "like'
February 8th, 2015
@annied @maggiemae I'm always loitering around holes
February 8th, 2015
@graemestevens @maggiemae of course you are Graeme - and that is why Maggiemae and I thought of you hahahaha
February 8th, 2015
@annied @graemestevens But we have to say the mouse-hole is not your scene!
February 8th, 2015
@maggiemae I had no idea there are a lot of pigs. I would not want to take a photo either.
February 8th, 2015
@deliad and @pitsmum are doing the trail at the moment with some lovely bike trail shots
February 8th, 2015
Sounds like a wonderful place to cycle. We have a few old railways lines here which were closed down and have now been made into footpaths/cycle trails and also nature reserves. The trouble is when you are walking with your dog the bikes come up very fast - they think the trail is just for them!! Sounds good with the coffee shop!!

Beautiful shot
February 8th, 2015
Beautiful capture of this once important train route. Looks better like this, I suppose. Nice to know that at the end of the tunnel one can stop for a good coffee.
February 8th, 2015
What a cool bike trail, I assume there were lights inside the tunnel.
I laughed at your #2 and #3 comments up there today. Too funny. fav
February 8th, 2015
quite stunning!
February 8th, 2015
if it's a long tunnel i'm not going in!
February 8th, 2015
Awesome shot
February 8th, 2015
Very cool
February 8th, 2015
great love to go there
February 8th, 2015
Nice composition
February 8th, 2015
A must place for a ride! Nice shot of the tunnel, the person going in just gives perspective too.
February 8th, 2015
Pigskin all in a row mouth to tail....sounds even more gruesome than the moles on our fences! ! Country matters are very down to earth!! This tunnel is rather scary....must be dark going through there! A big adventure though going through 'the other side '! Is that you on your bike?
February 8th, 2015
Very interesting photo and comment.
February 8th, 2015
Now that is my kind of bike trail. Flavia and I would enjoy it immensely
February 8th, 2015
Looks like proper gold rush landscape. Dark in that tunnel though.
February 8th, 2015
Great shot.

Nice photo & interesting comment.
February 8th, 2015
@happypat No, I didn't bring my bike this trip. They recommend cyclists take a torch for the tunnels on the trail. @judithg
February 8th, 2015
Looks like a photographer's dream.
February 8th, 2015
The end of the line sounds wonderful
February 8th, 2015
Such an interesting find
February 8th, 2015
i think you ought to push the bikes up the path that climbs the hill :)
February 8th, 2015
#3welcome home ;~}

Great shot of an interesting sounding destination!
February 8th, 2015
Sounds well worth the dark ride thru the tunnel
February 8th, 2015
nice texture and lighting
February 8th, 2015
I love to bike on trails like this. Especially when the ride ends in coffee and pastries!
February 9th, 2015
I am sooo drawn into this image. Right into the tunnel. Nice to have a human element to give it perspective. I want to see the cafe!!!!
February 9th, 2015
Bev
Fantastic shot, Maggie. Glad you aren't sleeping on an ironing board anymore!
February 9th, 2015
@prttblues I try to avoid staying at SIL's place because of a number of reasons - the everlasting conversation for one and the hard bed for another!
February 9th, 2015
Looks like an interesting area. There is a very popular program here "Rails to Trails" that does that too. Only I haven't seen one that made use of a tunnel. That would be fun to walk through.
February 9th, 2015
@olivetreeann On this particular trail there are about 4 tunnels. One of them has a sound recording of a steam train coming through that can frighten you off your bicycle!
February 9th, 2015
Maggie, I read the comments... and in my mind I am thinking that cyclists are riding through the tunnels with Olympic style "torches" took my brain a minute to realize it was "flashlight" for me. This would be an amazing place to explore.
February 9th, 2015
I would love to ride on that bike trail, it's gorgeous!
February 10th, 2015
Always love it when there is Light at the End of the Tunnel, and that coffee house in an old renovated house sounds divine!
February 15th, 2015
@panthora It was hot this day and so the tunnel would have been lovely and cool!
