Pictures and letters have been shared recently that have not been seen before. This is one of them from my father’s personal photograph album in the 1915 to 1920’s. He had pictures of what happened on the boat that was used to transport the troops over to Europe etc. They had a ‘wash’ day where the guys all lined up naked on the deck and had their body wash there then they ‘ran’ off to be replaced by another line! Photos were not clear but this one was because it was taken in a photographers studio in NZ
I do not know who this is but he is obviously a Padre as they called them and as was my father. It is one of the most clear of all the photographs!
Three good things:
1. I still have this photograph album - is it better than a computer album?
2. I’m going to wear my father’s medal to the dawn ceremony here for the fist time. My older half sister who died last year left this medal to me.
3 I got enthused by a 365 friend who walked high up on to a mountain for a view and did the same - only not so high!
It's a great portrait. I think Old photo albums have photos that are usually quite different in their look and feel and more personal. Lovely for you to have the medal to wear.
You will be so emotional wearing your fathers medal.....a very proud moment. How interesting that he was a padre....perhaps this is a friend of his. A very upright man he looks too. I hope you really enjoy the ceremony Maggiemae.
@happypat Thank you Pat - yes, proud to have a medal to wear. Didn't see anyone else wearing one other than the army people etc. Thousands of people there in our small town!
What a lovely moment for you Maggiemae to wear your Father's medal - it must have been very moving for you!! I love the photo - a great portrait. The old photos are fabulous - they can tell us so much. This generation won't have any photos as they will all be on their old phones and lost for all time!!
This is such a strong image. Gallipoli was so bad for the Anzac troopsjust as the Somme was forthe northern based ones. What a waste of life but so important to remember
It's a wonderful portrait and I love how you have so skilfully added colour. I think the photo albums of old (i.e. before they invented plastic) are still wonderful to have and browse through. Somehow there is less distraction than when viewing on screen.
Love the processing. I often wonder what will happen to all the memories that are stored in the cloud after someone stops paying. How will our great grandchildren or even grandchildren see the photos of the family and times.
He looks so stern and formal... but that is how it was done at the time. What a lovely portrait. The colors enhance the image, but I like the portrait even better. I am so glad that you get to wear your father's medal, passed down through time. Just amazing.
The old photo albums are fun- I think most of all because someone we know put them together. We get to see what they thought was important. So here was a friend of your father's. Looks like he kept good company!
Thanks for sharing the story, as sad as it may be. As some one who spent 20 plus years on the military, I appreciate those that appreciate us who have served.
