An opening by maggiemae

An opening

I sometimes have wondered what gives us pleasure in posting a 365 photo. Is it the number of ‘favs’, the number of comments, the ‘Trending Page' or even the ‘Popular Page”!

Or is it that you actually like the photo you have managed to get for that day? There are many days where you are not happy with the photo and maybe you get nice and polite comments. I find this difficult to think out - many people say, "no comments please” but the comments still come and maybe because it is genuinely good!

Personally I’m happy with honest comments even if they say , "not that wonderful , looking forward to better” but yet have to get one like this. Maybe 365 is all about supporting people rather than being honest about photos. There is nothing wrong with this - achievement, incentive and skill, feed on others' photos or comments.

My pleasure on 365 is communication with the people that I have begun to know and like! And I have to say I appreciate good comments.

Three good things;
1. This shot arrived in front of me walking home. I think they have just painted their gate and the driveway gates just further down.
2. Walked past a road accident where obviously someone had gone through a stop sign. How can any one be so silly? I’m glad on this particular road I go slowly.
3. A cheese and herb toasted sandwich - herbs from my poor glasshouse which has a limited future.
I LIKE this.... Interesting color for a gate, but it surely stands out.

This is a great shot.. I go through the same feelings and today I was also pleased with my shot...

I love visual things, but I'm married to a music teacher. He will look at a few pictures but doesn't get it when I ooh over light, and color and never wants to see as many pictures s I take. It was just nice to find people who understand that one small part of my life

and yes. This opening would have caught my eye too.

My pleasure on 365 is just like yours; communication with other people. Sometimes it feels like having a lot of new family. Of course it feels good to see one of my pictures on the PP or TP, because I'm always trying to post a picture I'm satisfied with.
April 28th, 2015
Bep
P.S. Like your red painted gate!
April 28th, 2015
Love the way the colors pop, especially that red!
April 28th, 2015
Such a vivid choice of colour, looks great against the conifers.

My enjoyment of 365 is the discipline it gives me (even though I fail often) in posting a shot every day. It gives me something to focus on and has given me the push to look at the world around us differently. Yes, it's nice to receive comments and occasionally get to trending and popular selections but I too would like criticism and advice on what I've done wrong in the shots I've taken.....I seem to be an accidential photographer who has no idea what's going on half the time :-)
April 28th, 2015
@sharrystar I could just say, ditto, Sharon!
April 28th, 2015
@pandorasecho Sharing the interest is good even if it is not in the same place, Dixie!
April 28th, 2015
Awesome shot
April 28th, 2015
Wonderful pops of red against the green... like a secret passageway. I enjoy the challenge of seeing the world in a new way, even when I don't feel like I have enough time, and learning how others see their world, too!
April 28th, 2015
I love the opening- it's like the entrance to the secret garden!

I do like to use a photo I am pleased with or it's a shot of something I want to share with you on 365. I often laugh to myself as the shots I really think are good are normally those which only get a few comments! My great pleasure comes from the interaction with other 365 'ers who I have got to know and feel I have a connection with. I also am fascinated to see the 365 world in pictures and have learnt so much about places I know I will never be able to visit.
April 28th, 2015
@pamknowler What you say is so true with me too, Pam!
April 28th, 2015
i look most of the time but not leave a comment because i prefer to leave something more meaningful comments. although i am of course guilty of the "nice shot" "fabulous" kind of comments. i don't really care if my photo does not make it to pp or tp or any other p but it does give a good feeling when it makes it there. one would not be very honest if he/she says getting on pp does not make them happy in any way. i simply think it would be an insult to those who fav'd your photo if you don't feel happy about it. i learned a lot since i came here and i know i will continue to learn. this is a community that keeps on giving and i give back by posting something that should at least feel meaningful to me. of course you know that you are one of my favourite people on here and i love looking at your photos and learning about oamaru.
April 28th, 2015
Great capture of contrasting colors and neat texures
April 29th, 2015
@summerfield I try to leave meaningful comments too and if I have a problem with something, I sandwich in between 2 good comments! Its a great discipline to concentrate on the photo and who posted it, what experience they have had and whether they like to look at your photos too and leave comments! Obviously there are an awful lot of people who look but don't comment. Thanks, Vikki - you are one of my favourite people too!
April 29th, 2015
Whoa- that gate really pops out of the green hedge! My quick comments are always meant to encourage. I like to leave longer ones, but sometimes life conspires against me- especially when I have lots of comments to follow up on. However, a quick comment says to me that someone took the time to look- and that's good enough. I always enjoy your comments! And how fun was it to find out that somewhere in our distant past we share a relative or two!
April 29th, 2015
That's a really interesting question - one that I've pondered many times. But I think it's the one that you like most! :)
April 29th, 2015
@olivetreeann In the 1800's the Scottish either went to Canada or to NZ - most like Scotland, I suppose. You can't say that Australia looks like Scotland.
April 29th, 2015
You posed a question that I'm sure has gone through the mind of many 365 participants. It is always nice to receive positive comments from your viewers, but I think for the person who participates in a project like this because it is something to be enjoyed, it's fun to capture images that are pleasing to our eyes. It is fun to create unique images, and it is fun to see what others think. We must be open to feedback, but in general the feedback is going to be positive because of the friendships involved, far and near.
April 29th, 2015
Oops, this scene is quite vivid, and that red gate is the center of attention
April 29th, 2015
@digitalrn Yes, I think Rick that nearly everyone is really tactful and wanting to continue the association with their friends.
April 29th, 2015
@maggiemae I don't know as I've never been to any of them- but I know you have! And I believe you. I have to double check the manifest but I think my Scottish ancestors came here in the 1800's as well.
April 29th, 2015
I too think this community helps us to grow as photographers, I love to get ideas from others and am truly in joy when I see a wonderful photo as this!! I have rarely seen what I call a bad photo here, because I think WE all love to photograph!! Its the comradely feeling I get here and love also to learn about other parts of the world! I consider myself an amateur, and will admit I have seen professional shots I do not like!! It is also fun to see that everyone has strengths in certain areas! Some have processing mastered others like me shoot mainly sooc! I always look forward to viewing your shots, and the magic that can come with them!! great question too!!!! and by the way a fav on this with the contrasting colors its a gem!!
April 29th, 2015
I didn't take one picture today. Was busy doing things around the house. But I found your thoughts interesting. My first exposure with a-photo-a-day website was through a site with the unflattering name, Ugly Hedgehog". I knew my photos were lacking because I was new and yet I never got an honest critique or offered any suggestions as to how to better my photography. They were all complimentary. Even here on the Project I can count on one hand the number of times I have has a less than positive comment and I can only recall one person who actually offered a suggestion on how to make one of my photos better through processing. I don't know why people seem to be afraid or hesitate to offer their honest opinions. Maybe it's because they do not feel they are qualified to critique another person's photographs? I know I struggle with commenting on another person's photographs that I don't care for. They say art is subjective so who am I to say that another's is poor. What makes me scratch my head in wonderment is when I take a photo that I love and it gets little attention as far as comments and favs. Then I take a picture that I wonder if it is worth posting and it ends up on the Trending Page or even the Popular Page. I certainly don't know the answer.
April 29th, 2015
@skipt07 Thank you, Skip for your wise and so true, words! I feel exactly the same - one photo I really love - and it gets 1 fav etc etc. But looking at this photo from another person's POV one can see it a bit more honestly! Its always good to try to improve and one learns in so many different ways. I don't like photography lessons though - prefer to find my own way!
April 29th, 2015
PS I love the pop of red against that bright green wall! I think if I had taken this I would have tried to tame down the window, the edge of the house and the bicycle in the opening to remove that little distraction. But, that is me. Some may say that the little red flower draws the eye from the red fence to it to draw the viewer into the photo.
April 29th, 2015
Agree with the comments made in this discussion. As the photographer I think we often have to ask when we want to have the photo critique. In that way the viewer feels it is safe to add a critique and that viewer is not overstepping. Important to note - everyone here is respectful of the art we offer. So the nods of congrats and acknowledgments have helped me want to be better at this art..
April 29th, 2015
@jporcaro I agree, Joan - if they ask, then they really want to know. We all need those nudges of 'well done' etc and I think most people really mean them!
April 29th, 2015
Beautiful shot. Great framing by the foliage.
April 29th, 2015
@skipt07 @maggiemae I so relate to Maggiemae's thoughts and would welcome honest commentary and suggestions, but not everyone seems open to that. The couple of times that I voiced an opinion, even though I did so gently and stressed that it was only my opinion of what I might have done differently, the person took offense and stopped following me.
April 29th, 2015
@skstein I think thats happened to me too a number of times! You have to be so careful but then I think, be happy with what you have got!
April 29th, 2015
I really do like the bright colors and composition of this shot, and the way my eye is led through the framing arch to the home with the bike parked in front of it at the other end.
April 29th, 2015
A M A Z I N G ! ! !
April 29th, 2015
I like the communitation too! That is one bright gate! And it looks like a little tunnel through the hedge to get to their house. Like going to another land. How cool!
April 29th, 2015
@kiwichick The hedge is very thick and goes all the way along their property - they must feel very secure in here!
April 29th, 2015
why I keep on adding on this site is for the friends and comments and mostly to see others beautiful and orignal photos.
they are so inspiring.
this red fence is like no other.
April 29th, 2015
Good thought provoking stuff there Maggiemae. When I started I felt such an amateur with my photography but what I was enjoying was finding a subject, took me outside myself for the moment. Then when I got breast cancer the community came to the fore and support was incredible. Now I do it for both, the capturing a moment in my day, whether technically correct or not, and the camaraderie.
April 29th, 2015
@andreajoy I think I felt like you - but when I think of when I started, I was so happy with what I did - until I saw how much better I could get! I love how the community gets together with dramatic and needingful moments with those that we share photos with!
April 29th, 2015
Wow! I love the pop of red Maggie. You've brightened up a cold, wet, windy, grey day here. believe me it needed brightening up!
I think my feelings about doing 365 have already been expressed by others in this post. I came to 365 as a new photographer who knew nothing and I mean nothing. Apartt from a few P&S shots of birthdays etc I had never even held a camera. For various reasons I needed an interest that wouldn't take me far from home and in my usual impulsive fashion bought a camera and joined 365 at the same time. It was the best thing I've ever done. Way to go but i am learning so much from all you kind people. I am really enjoying my new found interest and above all I have new friends from all over the world. Posting every day is a great discipline and great fun. I don't always get it right and often pictures I'm not sure about do better than the ones I like but that makes me try to see what others see and that way I learn. I learn so much from the stunning work of others on this site there are so many talented people on here. So I suppose it's friendship, learning and the pleasure of looking at the work of others that keeps me posting.
April 29th, 2015
Nice composition and colour contrast!
I agree with you that the friendship on this site is what keeps me posting every day.
April 29th, 2015
I love the secret look feel through this opening. The red gate is a real ey catcher and pulls you to the opening. I think 365 is many things to many people. All the comments here are so true, it's hard to define the site. I try to take the best shot I can or something that interests me and love to share in the hope that others will see something in it too.
April 29th, 2015
@thistle Joyce you have written what so many, I feel think! One of the most meaningful things i think is that we can 'create"! What pleases us and the more we learn from apps the more we can create! Its artistic!
April 29th, 2015
@jennywren I do like the fact that you read what others have written! I feel so much the same as all of them but love to read the words that make that reality!
April 29th, 2015
@spock ....and on the opposite side of the world it has got to be a unique view from us both!
April 29th, 2015
@maggiemae Indeed :)
April 29th, 2015
@spock smile!
April 29th, 2015
I love the extreme contrast of colours in this shot. Well spotted. The best part of 365 is that through photography one can make friends and communicate with others all over the world. In fact I feel sorry when you says he/she is calling it a day.
April 29th, 2015
@sangwann so do I, Dione, in fact i have kept them as followers in spite of the fact they haven't posted for 3 years!
April 29th, 2015
Lovely, vibrant colours. That sure is some hedge!
April 29th, 2015
its the friendship, and the creative outlet for me...
I love this shot, but I want the bottom of the hedge at the right to be right down to the bottom like it is on the left.... tell them to get on to it
April 29th, 2015
love this shot - makes me think of a workshop on Christmas eve. agree with all that has been said here about support, friendship and communication.
April 29th, 2015
Good job I'm not motivated by PP and TT - I'd have given up! Well they are not going to accidentally walk past that gate!
April 29th, 2015
@kali66 I can see you are a perfectionist, Kali! All good!
April 29th, 2015
Now you get people talking, that is what I like in 365.
April 29th, 2015
I like this....a lot....but, then again I am always drawn to red like a bull to a matador's cape!! Seriously, though, this is quite a find, but I think what bothers me about it is how centered that door is in that asymmetrical composition. I think I would have cropped everything out on the right including that white post with the house number, and given it more breathing room on the left. The bicycle and window beyond don't bother me; it shows that there is "life" beyond that gate!
As for your other thoughts, that's a tough one. I think we all came here for the love of photography, but we are staying for the community! I, for one, can attest that I have learned a whole lot and grown immensely from interacting with the amazing photographers on this site. It does not all have to be a direct criticism of my work; most of the time I learn from watching what others have created and how they have done it. I try not to fall into the trap of complacency. I know what gets liked, and what gets FAVed (even though, that is not always a given, and sometimes the results surprise me, as they do others), but I try to push the limits and try new things, even if I don't always succeed. It's hard to know what people's limits are when it comes to criticism, plus who's got the time for a diatribe, especially if you have to defend it!! All in all this is a great place! :-))
April 29th, 2015
i don't feel comfortable making suggestions on others work, i mostly comment so they know i saw their picture.
April 30th, 2015
Thanks Osia for your deep thoughts and good messages contained in these! I'm sure you are right - we stay here for the friends we have made and are getting to know as well as the challenge of how best to take a photograph!
April 30th, 2015
@chard ....and thats so encouraging! I feel sorry for those who only have 2 or 3 comments!
April 30th, 2015
I saw the shot yesterday and thought it was magnificent! I got busy and didn't comment and today I'm so glad of that. Had I commented yesterday I would not of been able to read all the amazing comments that you have garnered with your question!
April 30th, 2015
This is so interesting....hard to take my eyes off it. I love the comments people make....I especially love reading stories that go with the photos. It is time consuming, but so worth it and helps to explain the photo or the feeling when it was taken. I tend to "fav" a lot...not because I am trying to get someones photo on a "special" page, but because it really touches me in a way that makes me want to fav it for me. Did this even before I figured out what all those pages meant. I thought I would have a nice little file of my favorite photos...couldn't possibly look at them all now, but they are MINE!! I espcially love your stories and your sense of humor is always so refreshing!
May 1st, 2015
@eyesmile Thanks Gena - I think its great that people want to respond with their own thoughts. I 'fav' a lot because I think its a genuinely good picture! I also think that a lot of photographers here on 365 are really far better than a lot of professionals!
May 1st, 2015
Wow, that gate is a real pop of colour! It's so inviting and makes you want to see what's inside.
As for your questions - it's nice to get positive comments and favs and I really appreciate others taking the time to look at my photos. It's a discipline getting something up every day and I don't always manage it and it does mean that I'm not always happy with what I do post. What I do like is the sense of community and the supportive nature of this site that gives you the security to try new things out and make mistakes. The photos here are inspiring and I love the glimpses of other lives and other places.
May 2nd, 2015
@barb_b Its nice to hear your thoughts Barb! I think its nice that people want to comment -they could easily look and pass by! I also love the glimpses of peoples' lives in different countries and seasons!
May 2nd, 2015
Instant fav, this is stunning (and I mean that honestly). I find I learn through the 365 sometimes by what people don't say in their comments, and somehow by osmosis--from reading comments and looking at others' pictures. I'm afraid I have stopped worrying about always posting a picture taken the same day. I'm more interested in the quality of a picture than when it was taken. I spend hours, usually every other day, on my commenting, and that time is made so much more interesting when I get to look at pictures I can enjoy, whenever they were taken--and I try to post pictures I hope others will enjoy. I am so completely immersed in photography because of this project that I don't feel I need the spur of having to shoot something every day (though I do shoot most days).
May 3rd, 2015
Stunning color, wonderful pic!
May 4th, 2015
Love the red gate and the bike sneaking on the back ground.
