High Country Pass by maggiemae

High Country Pass

A simple scene but the great and bare mountains of Central Otago surround you with their presence. This is just down from the top of a high pass, called the Lindis at 970metres. The forecast was for snow here and we were pleased to see no evidence of this on our journey down to Queenstown.

Three good things:
1. The previous day’s snow had all gone with heavy rain so we were so happy we saw it with the sun and blue skies as well
2. A great egg sandwich, nicely seasoned at morning coffee at a cafe on the way.
3. Disappointed with our GPS who demands a street number and street name ALL the time! However it got us there when we were able to find the address on a piece of paper.
Great shot of this barren bit of our Country, ...

Great shot. I remember this pass but we were through it in high summer. I loved the Otago peninsula and all the surrounding countryside

Great shot. Encourages travel. :)

My sat nav also wants the whole street name before it can take you exactly there....drives me mad!
Looking with interest at your roads in Winter.....Lydia & her friend will be driving around the roads of South Island in July/ August & mum is worried they will be bad with snow .& ice...Arthur's Pass has been mentioned! This view is wonderful.

June 12th, 2015
Looks a great road to travel on.
June 12th, 2015
Wonderful mountains
June 12th, 2015
@happypat You have to check all the time on AA Roadwatch. Every day is different in the winter but many times the road is closed! Or chains must be carried.
June 12th, 2015
Love the way the road fades into the hills!!
June 12th, 2015
Lovely mountain scene
June 12th, 2015
Nice to be on the road when the weather isn't threatening. love all the lines and colors in this shot.
June 12th, 2015

June 12th, 2015
Wonderful sense of depth. Nice shot.
June 13th, 2015
Oh it does look just so beautiful. I can just smell NZ when I look at it. I know that seems weird but every country I have ever visited seems to have it's own smell. My favourite of all is NZ :)
June 13th, 2015
I love the light and shadows you have captured here and composition is amazing! This looks very similar to where I grew up in Washington state!
June 13th, 2015
gorgeous
June 13th, 2015
Amazing landscape.
June 13th, 2015
I love the way the mountains seem to fold into each other--I'm not expressing that well, but perhaps you know what I mean. Fav.
June 13th, 2015
Great shot, leading lines, layers, composition
June 13th, 2015
Nice
June 13th, 2015
great scene; for my gps I just make up a street and number to keep her happy
June 13th, 2015
thos cool blue shadows are a giveaway of the outside temperature
June 13th, 2015
@hjbenson Thats what I've been doing but then it insists on taking me to this unknown place!
June 13th, 2015
@kali66 It is, Kali but it wasn't that cold - 11degC - the time of day affects the blue colours in the mountains too!
June 13th, 2015
I t looks very bleak but still beautiful Maggie. I like the way you've captured the sun lighting up the side of the mountain. Hard to imagine you have cold and snow when we have warm summer rain! Well we had sun yesterday so mustn't expect too much!
June 13th, 2015
@thistle Its not all bad, Joyce - cool nights and sitting in the cool air with the sun on your face is just wonderful! Not worrying about skin cancer!
June 13th, 2015
@tristansmum Thats exactly why I chose to take this photo, Stephanie!
June 13th, 2015
Awesome shot. Love the composition and the light and shadow complementing each other b

June 13th, 2015
Very spectacular countryside. Fav
June 13th, 2015
@deliad Its very bare but a good road, Delia - all you have to worry about is those foreign drivers coming round the corner on the wrong side of the road!
June 13th, 2015
wow great shot ,love those mountains
June 13th, 2015
Beautiful mountains, it looks a rather lonely road.
June 13th, 2015
Lovely composition.
June 13th, 2015
Nice lines and shapes.
June 13th, 2015
Fabulous capture and a fav.
June 13th, 2015
This is a compelling and lovely landscape. I really like how the muscular shapes of the mountains are revealed by the lack of foliage. I am glad you had no snow... I can see how snow would be difficult in this this terrain.
June 13th, 2015
A majestic landscape.
June 13th, 2015
Wow, this could be South Africa en route to the Queenstown in our Eastern Cape province.
June 13th, 2015
Wonderful capture...Fav
June 13th, 2015
I love your perspective Maggie!
June 13th, 2015

fav
June 13th, 2015
A very dramatic scene
June 13th, 2015
Love the clean lines and strong shapes of this composition. Just a skerrick of snow I see... bet Sadie was relieved.
June 13th, 2015
@snaphappi Yes the temps were in the double figures here so no possibility of snow! Most unusual but a relief! The forecast was for snow to fall halfway up this pass!
June 13th, 2015
So barren and stark, but a lovely drive none-the-less. Especially with the blue skies!
June 14th, 2015
Great shot of the mountains and all their shadows!
June 14th, 2015
love the perspective you've captured - another FAV
June 14th, 2015

June 14th, 2015
Great shot!
June 14th, 2015
Beautiful shot....love all the layering of the mountains!! And, I have given up on GPS systems.....I just use Google maps on my iphone, and it usually gets me to where I want to go with various routes, too! FAV!
June 14th, 2015
Wonderful capture. Great perspective in this shot. Very dramatic.
June 15th, 2015
Rugged, beautiful countryside.
