A simple scene but the great and bare mountains of Central Otago surround you with their presence. This is just down from the top of a high pass, called the Lindis at 970metres. The forecast was for snow here and we were pleased to see no evidence of this on our journey down to Queenstown.
Three good things:
1. The previous day’s snow had all gone with heavy rain so we were so happy we saw it with the sun and blue skies as well
2. A great egg sandwich, nicely seasoned at morning coffee at a cafe on the way.
3. Disappointed with our GPS who demands a street number and street name ALL the time! However it got us there when we were able to find the address on a piece of paper.
My sat nav also wants the whole street name before it can take you exactly there....drives me mad!
Looking with interest at your roads in Winter.....Lydia & her friend will be driving around the roads of South Island in July/ August & mum is worried they will be bad with snow .& ice...Arthur's Pass has been mentioned! This view is wonderful.
@happypat You have to check all the time on AA Roadwatch. Every day is different in the winter but many times the road is closed! Or chains must be carried.
Oh it does look just so beautiful. I can just smell NZ when I look at it. I know that seems weird but every country I have ever visited seems to have it's own smell. My favourite of all is NZ :)
I t looks very bleak but still beautiful Maggie. I like the way you've captured the sun lighting up the side of the mountain. Hard to imagine you have cold and snow when we have warm summer rain! Well we had sun yesterday so mustn't expect too much!
@deliad Its very bare but a good road, Delia - all you have to worry about is those foreign drivers coming round the corner on the wrong side of the road!
This is a compelling and lovely landscape. I really like how the muscular shapes of the mountains are revealed by the lack of foliage. I am glad you had no snow... I can see how snow would be difficult in this this terrain.
@snaphappi Yes the temps were in the double figures here so no possibility of snow! Most unusual but a relief! The forecast was for snow to fall halfway up this pass!
Beautiful shot....love all the layering of the mountains!! And, I have given up on GPS systems.....I just use Google maps on my iphone, and it usually gets me to where I want to go with various routes, too! FAV!
