In the 1880's by maggiemae

In the 1880's

Denniston Plateau north of Westport in NZ was an isolated place over 600 metres up in the mountains. Families lived here for decades in awful conditions. There were wonderful photographs or pictures in this case, transposed on to glass -or plastic showing a street or building scene.
There are members of our train group seen through these pictures learning about the coal mining history!

Three good things:
1. That I can see so many of my wonderful 365 friends comments on my photos when I don't have time to see their great photos as well.
2. A full day of a 4 hour train trip through gorges and plateau-s? How do you spell a number of plateau - with an 'x"?
3. Pancake rocks challenged my camera and the time frame I had to get back to our bus....
It is plateaux for me. Looks like a great historic place to visit. Beautiful!

@sangwann think you are right, Dione - have to resort to the french!

Great photo memories. Reminds me of the Denniston Rose books - interesting to read of history whether factual or fiction. So did you get some pancake rocks with the blowholes blowing?

What a great display - quite unusual. Nice shot.

A great capture.

an x is probably the proper way, but i've never seen it.

Sounds like a beautiful historic place. Plateaus and plateaux are both correct (says my dictionary).

Very cool shot, Maggie. I like what they've done. You captured it perfectly. I would have thought it would be with an "S".

This is an absolutely amazing image! It gives a double exposure effect! Wonderful to see the old over the new by shooting through the window! Fantastic composition!

A picture that takes my eyes back and back again to look at the detail. well done, fav

An x I think maggiemae.....the English language is not easy sometimes! Don't bother with the commenting bit....we are loving your travels & just glad you can still upload from the back of beyond! It's a littke mini tour within a tour! Does your tour operator know you are sub letting so to speak!

Great image, details, history
September 9th, 2015
Great shot. Denniston sounds an interesting place to visit. Plateaux looks more correct to me.

I really enjoy how the images of today and yesterday are superimposed on each other. Fascinating.

Intriguing way to display the images. Great capture

@happypat Thanks Pat - puts me less in a bind with limited time. I can use the net via my iPhone on the train but as nobody else is using phones or computers I don't want to either. Quite amazing that - but then most of them are of the white haired variety! They probably don't even have an evening drink before dinner!

Wonderful capture. Love the idea of the pictures transposed onto the glass.

Love the detail on these glass plates. Your composition looks 30

Wondered if you'd show us this area. Family research shows my great grandmother marrying for the third time and moving from Victoria to NZ to live and work in the mines on the Dennison Plateau. Thanks for sharing. Don't think I'll ever get to see the spot myself. Also loved the Dunedin railway station. We did visit there and your photo brought back beautiful memories. It is a fabulous building.

Love the way you've incorporated a collage into your shot. This sounds like such an interesting train journey.

Very cool! I like this!
September 9th, 2015
That is a very cool shot! It almost looks like one of those mirror box shots. It is also a great idea to help you see what the place used to look like. Glad you're enjoying the trip!

@gijsje Thats interesting, Bep! But it looks funny with an 's'.
September 10th, 2015
@ubobohobo Fascinating place and well shown for its history - it was a very hard life that they lived up there with constant injury and death too!
September 10th, 2015
@kwiksilver Most of the passengers, perhaps all of them are NZers and are loving seeing the places from the windows of a train!
September 10th, 2015
cool capture

Beautifully done, and it sounds like such an interesting place. Your trip sounds very worthwhile on the whole, even though a bit frustrating at times.
September 11th, 2015
That's a really cool shot.....I love the superimposed images!
September 11th, 2015
Ha, Denniston! Great composition - yesteryear superimposed on today. It is many years since I have visited this town and then it was shrouded in cloud and deserted. I must plan another Westland trip, perhaps next winter.

@snaphappi You really feel isolated away up here on the mountain plateau, Maggie - all of us felt the history of the place!
September 11th, 2015
@maggiemae I think I heard that they were going to start mining again up there?
