The little Red Hut by maggiemae

The little Red Hut

This picture tells this story….

A small red night watchman's shed on the Oamaru wharf has a passing link to Scott's Terra Novaexpedition.

In the early hours of 10 February 1913 the Oamaru Harbour Board's night watchman, Neil McKinnon, was expecting the arrival of the Ngatoro. Instead another ship arrived and ignored his signals to identify itself. Eventually two men were rowed ashore but they refused to provide any information on why they were there and asked to speak to an official. McKinnon escorted the two men to his hut and telephoned the harbourmaster, Captain James Ramsey.

The two men were Dr Edward Atkinson and Lieutenant Harry Pennell from Scott's Terra Nova. They were sent ashore at Oamaru to send a coded message to the expedition's New Zealand agent, Joseph Kinsey, informing him that Scott and his polar party had perished in the Antarctic.

Three good things:
1. A memorial to a man who made history.
2. The sun came out for our summer -it always happens when the children go back to school
3. Still to make a decision - fly or cruise!
What a fascinating piece of history! And such a nondescript little building to be such a huge important part of it! Magnificent catch of it!!

How very interesting Maggiemae......so sad they had to report that bad news & it all came from your little town!
Such love,y shades & colours in this photo......the hill behind has beautiful shades of green & pinks.
Still calm waters!
Fly or sail.....cruise perhaps but as you are both so fit perhaps leave the cruising until you're older! You are both so good getting about that more of a challenge this year do you think?

Missed this one -- I like how brilliant the lighting is, and the way the red hut pops and gives us a starting focal point. Would work well, I bet, with SC too.
