Burn-out! by maggiemae

Burn-out!

These are quite usual at this time of the year. Farmers use burning to get the soil back to square one and have to get permission and choose the right time. Wind direction and speed, as you can imagine is very important.
Its really quite dramatic seeing the smoke from miles away and then getting closer and closer! Taken from our car.
We used to see this, especially with flax stubble, but I think it's been banned now as I haven't seen it in years. Very impressive to watch!

If you didn't know about the "planned burning" this would strike terror in someone's heart. Good capture!

Gena, above, is the one who coined the "windshield photography" word for shots taken from the car. This is a good one Well done. Really and interesting landscape photo.

@olivetreeann If there wasn't lots of this sort of smoke happening all around the Canterbury flats, I would have been concerned, too, Ann!

farmers and others burn their fields and weeds here, and every year at least one fire gets away from them.

Some of my favorite photos have been taken through the passenger side window of a speeding... well, not "speeding".... car.... You did well.

We have out-of-control fires raging in the Western Cape at the moment - so it's quite scary to see something like this. Hopefully they manage to keep them under control.

Nice shot, Maggie. They burn here as well and have to go through the permit process.
