Knees deep in Fodder Beet by maggiemae

Knees deep in Fodder Beet

The overall winner of the Winter Feed Competion held a Field Day on his farm. There were two categories in Fodder Beet - one, dry, the other, irrigated. This one is dry and has amazing growth.
Awesome shot

Not something I've seen before. Must get out and explore more. Great shot.

Lots of envious faces in that group - nice bit of reportage Maggiemae.

Great group shot Maggie

This is very interesting.

What a cool funky image! Neat contest. I want beets now!:)
May 23rd, 2015
What an interesting shot !!

@amandal I think its food for dairy cows only, Amanda and you definitely don't fall into that category!
May 23rd, 2015
Ahhh, fodder...I get it. When I was in middle school, some wicked boys called me Elsie the Cow...and I was tiny. Meanies!
May 23rd, 2015
@amandal Good grief - typical bullies! Perhaps the worst thing they could think of!
May 23rd, 2015
@maggiemae And of course it gave me a complex. I need to prepare my girls for this garbage down the road and how they handle it.
May 23rd, 2015
@amandal I think the main thing is to get the girls to tell you what has been said if it has then you can provide a comforting answer. If they dwell on it ( my mother used that word) it becomes more and more distressing.
May 23rd, 2015
Very thick growth. How do they harvest that?
May 23rd, 2015
@tigerdreamer Normally they just put up electric fences, let the cattle in and they start munching!
May 23rd, 2015
Ha a gaggle of experts. Great shot.
May 23rd, 2015
Looks like a bunch of people outstanding in their field! :-)
May 23rd, 2015
@skipt07 hahaha, Skip!
May 23rd, 2015
Love the body language here.....a typical farmer group.....the one third from right really has his thinking cap on!! Fave for me because it's my world. @amandal A cow is a wonderful beast Amanda.....the bullies have no idea...ignorant lot!
May 23rd, 2015
@happypat Its either, hands in pockets, or folded arms!
May 23rd, 2015
Love it - kiwi farmers all in a row - you have captured the feeling and scene very well.
May 23rd, 2015
@dide You notice there are no females here!
May 23rd, 2015
@maggiemae No - they were all out having coffee in the warmth of a cafe!!!!
May 23rd, 2015
Such an interesting shot.
May 23rd, 2015
@dide No, Diane - there was only me with a camera and another young female who seemed to belong to a Company!
May 23rd, 2015
Great shot :)
May 23rd, 2015
I just love this so typical of a group of farmer's the world over. They are all so engrossed in their serious discussion.
May 23rd, 2015
They look like they've wandered together and are lost
May 23rd, 2015
@wearing0 @thistle I like both of your thoughts on this photo! Typical of a farmer's group, Joyce- deeply engrossed and Debi..... they do look confused as to why they are standing knee deep here in this green field!
May 23rd, 2015
I think you should send this photo in to the local agricultural paper maggiemae....our news correspondent on the spot!
May 23rd, 2015
@happypat They did ask for one, Pat - not sure whether its the ODT or the Oamaru Mail - perhaps I'l send to both! Breakfast go OK?
May 23rd, 2015
Another busy day at the office?
May 23rd, 2015
@tiedmark Your comment made me smile and also made me think that my office isn't so ''**@" bad! Though there was a very cold wind here which made me wish I had brought a woolly hat!
May 23rd, 2015
Ha, nice shot.
May 23rd, 2015
You have captured the farmers well. Although in the UK,. farming is also my life. I can just hear them saying 'how the devil does he get his beet to grow so well, what does he do that we don't' - ha ha. The discussion will still be going on.
May 23rd, 2015
@shirleybankfarm Everything was made public - seed, fertilisation, etc. This farm was well looked after with good fence and out buildings!
May 23rd, 2015
@maggiemae don't get me wrong Maggiemae, I wasn't saying anything was amiss with the competition and judging, If farmers round you are anything like ours there is always that wonder as to how someone can better them. Sometimes they can't see the wood for the trees.
May 23rd, 2015
serious business
May 23rd, 2015
Had I not read all the comments I might have thought this was a prayer meeting by a group of like-dressed cult members.
May 23rd, 2015
Some of them look less than enthusiastic! One of them looks like my grandfather passed away over 30 years ago! Quite an interesting POV!
May 23rd, 2015
Neat shot and reporting
May 23rd, 2015
Lots of wonderful "human interest" in this shot. You can just tell they are standing around, discussing all the things that a group of farmers would discuss. The comments are very insightful, too! :)
May 23rd, 2015
@shirleybankfarm My comment did sound a bit miffy, Shirley - didn't mean to! All I meant was they wanted to share their knowledge which was good.
May 23rd, 2015
@francoise Your comment made me laugh! Francoise!
May 23rd, 2015
Lots of great body language here, definitely. a blokes thing. Good capture of them.
May 23rd, 2015
i like your blues and greens maggie
May 24th, 2015
I love this composition!
May 24th, 2015
Great composition. And such an interesting subject.
May 24th, 2015
I cannot imagine what they are discussing but they all look interested. Is there much to say about the soil, fertilizer, weather conditions, slope of the land , time of planting etc. perhaps there is as I've listed a few things! Good shot
