Castle Point lighthouse is one of only two lighthouses in New Zealand that are still fitted with the original lens. It was first lit in 1913.
The light was originally illuminated by an incandescent oil burning lamp. This was changed to diesel-generated electricity in 1954. In 1961 the light was connected to mains electricity.
In 1988 the light station was automated and the last keeper was withdrawn.
Great capture. Love the big grey patch stretching down to the water from the lighthouse, it looks like a large sheet with the ripples on the sea edge. Interesting information on the life of this historic building.
Lovely scene of the rocks, sea & lighthouse. Strange that the lighthouse is so far back from the edge of the rocks. Sure it must lose some of the height to be seen from out at sea.
@happypat We climbed up there today and could see that the Lighthouse faced east more than north where the land curved round and sheltered the bay. Fantastic structure!
