My middle son and I have made our own vanilla extract — that’s what I’m trying to perfect this year. We will have to pare notes. Ironically, yesterday my friend returned the empty bottle from our last batch of extract. I think it’s a sign that I need to get started.
@wiesnerbeth ooo! I should try making some. There was a vanilla bean shortage this past year and the price has gone way up (in case you haven't noticed). I highly recommend beans from Penzey's if you have one nearby. They're reasonably priced and so much better than the ones from the grocery. Plus you get a little glass test tube...
@margonaut I will have to check out Penzey’s (and I love test tubes!). I usually get mine on amazon or from www.beanilla.com. I agree about the ones from the grocery store — they are awful.
