I have been trying to get a photograph of the Goldcrests that is good enough for the Camera Club Competition. I think this is getting closer to what I am after.
@365projectorgchristinewebb Thank you Christine, I am in Halton Photographic Society. Our January competition was judged on Monday night, I got a Commended with a shot for the theme of Shadows, but I was really happy to get First, Second, Third in Nature. This Goldcrest will probably go into the February comp.
We do a points system out of 20 which I thought would work but it isn't. I had 44 points out of 60 for the 3 photos I put in recently. Judge can be quite cruel sometimes, out leading photographer had less points than me this competition, and her photos were stunning, I know they sa you shouldn't get upset but it can be quite cutting. the problem with me and hubbie is that we are not up on photoshop, what you see is what you get straight from the camera. Well done for your marks, you do take fab photos though, love the goldcrest.
@365projectorgchristinewebb Hi Christine, we only use the points system occasionally when we have an inter-club competition. Normally we do First, Second, Third, Highly Commended, and Commended, the last two sometimes used more once if there is a very large and excellent entry.
I know what you mean about Judges but most of the time we seem to get very fair ones who offer constructive critique and advice even to entries put in by beginners who are clearly not yet up to a very high standard.
Some judges do seem to prefer a particular genre of photography, and I have seen some stunning images, not mine, that half the room thought was a winner just scrape a commended, or not even that.
I don't use Photoshop, and most of my images are not very heavily edited.
@markp thanks mark, nice to hear that someone else doesn't use photoshop, we used the same system as you till this season, but I don't think the points are working.
