No, this isn't an American Cardinal, although I thought his windblown head reminded me of one. This is a Chaffinch which until recently was not really a regular visitor to the garden. Strangely a few years ago they used to visit next doors feeders, and I could see them perched in the trees and bushes, but they never seemed to fly the few yards to my side of the hedge.
Happily that has now changed.
