Showy rattlebox seed pods...

When they have dried and turned brown, the seeds will rattle inside the pods in the wind and sound like a baby's rattle or a rattlesnake! Also known as Crotalaria Spectabilis. I posted a view of the their blossoms here... http://365project.org/marlboromaam/extra-stuff/2012-07-21 and here... http://365project.org/marlboromaam/365/2012-07-21

Lovely plant also with seed pods - look at those stripes on them!

Nice to see these attractive pods - color and form with that black line down the centre! A bit like a pea pod! The flowers look a bit like a snapdragon.

@sugarmuser Thank you so much, Sharon!

@sassik Thank you, Sassik! It's an interesting plant to follow through its stages.

@maggiemae It's in the legume family, so its flowers and pods do look like pea blossoms and pea pods. However, this is quite poisonous to grazing animals and humans. Thank you for your kind comments, Maggiemae!

So interesting. Did you grow up on a farm??? You have such a great knowledge of nature. So glad you share it. And it's a lovely shot.

@wenbow Thank you very much, Wendy!

@beckys Thank you, Becky!

@yonnie LOL! My father was a Georgia farm boy and my mother, a Smoky Mountain farm girl. I grew up in the USAF, but I have always had a need to know about the things around me. So I Google often, if I don't know. That's how I learn. Thank you for your kind comments, Yvonne!

So that's what that plant is! I've got one by the front porch with purple flowers when it blooms (and was planning to take a shot of the pods).

@janets Janet, your plant is NOT "Showy Rattlebox" with purple flowers. Showy rattlebox only has YELLOW flowers. However, it is in the same family! Your plant is, as far as I can tell, Crotalaria verrucosa (blue rattlebox) but it is native to India and is only supposed to be found as an invasive plant in Florida. I wonder if what you have is not some kind of hybrid that was planted from seed as a perennial or annual and bought from a garden center some time ago? Check this link out for the different pics of "blue rattlebox." http://www.google.com/search?q=Crotalaria+verrucosa+in+usa&hl=en&client=safari&rls=en&prmd=imvns&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=HpQkUMf-IKr50gHhuoGIDA&ved=0CFQQsAQ&biw=1245&bih=1003
