This 10-storey building is called the 'Witte Huis' (White House). It's a national heritage site and built by architect Willem Molenbroek in 1898. It was the first high-rise building and therefore also tallest building in Europe at the time (43 m).
Because the fear of a fire, the building is almost entirely built of stone, which made it extraordinary heavy. To prevent the building from sinking, more than 1000 supporting piles were driven into the soft soil.
Our White House can be found at the historic Old Harbour, nowadays one of the most popular nightlife areas in Rotterdam with restaurants, bars and terraces.
